Theodoricus block
Theodoricus Block, also: Dietrich Bloch, Truncus; (* around 1460 in Hildesheim ; † 1524 in Magdeburg ) was a German physician , Catholic theologian and humanist .
Life
Block saw the light of day in Hildesheim, his parents came from Braunschweig and were able to enable him to study at the University of Erfurt in 1478 . Here he made friends with the poet Hinrich Boger , who called him Truncus . Block graduated from the baccalaureate in Erfurt in 1480 and acquired the academic degree of Magister of the Seven Liberal Arts in 1482 .
He later turned to medical studies. For this he went to Italy , where he attended the University of Bologna with Christoph von Scheurl and Giovanni Garzoni attended lectures: He completed his studies in 1500 with the promotion of Doctor of Medicine from. He then went on a trip to Rome and arrived on May 23, 1502 as a professor at the University of Rostock . From Rostock he communicated with Boger again. At Scheurl's instigation, he ended up at the University of Wittenberg in the summer semester of 1507 , where he took over the professorship for medicine. In Wittenberg , he mainly interacted with the local poets Richard Sbrulius , Otto Beckmann , Kilian Reuter and others.
Above all, a humanistic attitude can be recognized, as his doctoral speeches prove. Here he became rector of the university in the summer semester of 1508 , but had to leave it in the summer semester of 1511 for reasons that have not yet been clarified. After his successor Ulrich Erbar was killed by a student in revenge, efforts were made in Wittenberg in 1512 and again in 1517. However, he himself stayed in Magdeburg, where he died and was buried with the Premonstratensians .
Lucas Cranach the Elder created an ex-libris for Bloch around 1510 . He also portrayed Bloch's partner named Gesa (the picture has not survived).
In research, Bloch is confused with older namesake working in Halberstadt.
