The Spiritual Academy in Kiev accepted him as a student in 1837. On 15 February 1841 he was awarded with the monk ordination named Theophan. Its namesake was Theophanes , the confessor in the icon controversy. On July 1, 1841, he was ordained a priest monk. In 1842 he became an inspector and lecturer at the Novgorod Spiritual Seminary . In 1844 he received a bachelor's degree in moral and pastoral theology at the Spiritual Academy in St. Petersburg . In 1847 he traveled to Jerusalem . In the library of the monastery of St. Sabas he copied Greek father texts and thus laid the foundation for his later transmission of monastic father theology in Russia. In 1854 he returned to Russia, was appointed Archimandrite and in 1855 was rector of the spiritual seminary in Olonez . In 1856 he became head of the church at the Russian embassy in Constantinople . In 1866 he retired to the Wyscha monastery. Here he lived from 1873 as a hermit . Theophan was an extremely fruitful writer. His catalog raisonné includes 505 titles. His sermons, which he had given in St. Petersburg, Tambov and Vladimir, were published, as well as his extensive correspondence. He wrote literary letters in which he described the way to salvation. From this grew his main moral theological work. He commented on some psalms and the letters of the apostle Paul. The most widespread was his translation of the Philocalie : Dobrotoljubie . Theophan died in 1894.
