Thierry Carrel (born May 23, 1960 in Freiburg i. Üe. ) Is a Swiss heart surgeon .

Life

After graduating from the Jesuit College St. Michael in his hometown, Thierry Carrel studied human medicine at the Universities of Freiburg and Bern . He passed the state examination in 1984 and received his doctorate in 1985. This was followed by training as an FMH specialist in general surgery and training in cardiovascular surgery under the direction of Marko Turina with special attention to surgery on newborns and small children. In 1993 , Carrel qualified as a professor in the field of cardiovascular surgery at the University of Zurich and in 1994 was awarded the FMH specialist title for cardiovascular surgery. This was followed by stays abroad in Hanover , Paris , Helsinki and Baltimore .


Academic career

In 1999 he was promoted to full professor at the University of Bern and director of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital in B ern appointed. In the meantime he turned down various appointments to foreign universities. In 2004 Carrel turned down the offer of the University Hospital Zurich to manage the local heart clinic. From 2006 to 2008 Carrel was head physician ad interim for cardiac surgery at the University Hospital Basel.

Since beginning his cardiac surgery activity, Carrel has performed over 12,000 operations (as a surgeon, teacher or assistant). He is the author of over 700 peer-reviewed scientific publications, is co-editor of several international journals and an active member of 25 professional societies. Under his leadership, the clinical and experimental research at the Bern Heart Clinic received regular financial support from the Swiss National Science Foundation , the Novartis Foundation , the German Research Foundation and industry. The results of this research were awarded 35 prizes in Switzerland and abroad: From these research activities, under his leadership, 65 dissertations , 25 habilitation theses and around 12 promotions to professorships at the medical faculties of the universities of Bern, Basel, Geneva and other hospitals in Originated at home and abroad.


Humanitarian activities

From 2000 to 2015 he took on the task of building and expanding a center for the treatment of heart diseases in the city of Perm , in the middle of the Ural region. During this time, he and his team visited his Russian colleagues once or twice a year and received them regularly in Bern for further training. In 2014, Thierry Carrel founded "Corelina, the foundation for the heart of children", of which he has been president ever since. The foundation supports the treatment of children from Africa and the Middle East with congenital heart defects in Switzerland, works with the Terre des Hommes Foundation on a similar project in Morocco and also supports Swiss families who are in need due to a child's illness.

Carrel has been president of the non-profit association for children with rare diseases since 2014. The Friends' Association offers affected families financial support, connects affected families with one another and raises public awareness of the issue of rare diseases.


Personal

Carrel is married to the TV presenter Sabine Dahinden . Carrel has a daughter from his first marriage.

Carrel is known in Switzerland for a documentary that was released in 2005 and portrays him and his work. In September 2008 he treated the sick Federal Councilor Hans-Rudolf Merz , whom he set several bypasses .

In 2015 Weber / Werdt Verlag published the book "From the heart: the heart surgeon, the operation, the patient", written by the Bernese author and journalist Walter Däpp. The book has so far appeared in 4 editions and was translated into French ("De tout coeur") in 2017.

In his free time, Thierry Carrel likes to ride his racing bike and is an active member as bass trombonist with the La Concordia wind orchestra in Freiburg. He also performs regularly with the Orpheum Orchestra in the Tonhalle in Zurich and with the World Doctors Orchestra worldwide.

Honors

  • 2013: Leonardo da Vinci Prize of the European Society for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) as the best trainer in Europe
  • 2015: Honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Friborg (Switzerland)
  • 2018: Elected to the board of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery
