Tomas Forslund (born November 24, 1968 in Falun ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player . During his career he played for the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League , the Kölner Haie in the German Ice Hockey League and Leksands IF in the Swedish Elitserien on the position of right winger .
Career
Forslund began his professional career in 1985 with the then Swedish first division club Leksands IF in the Elitserien , after he had already played five games for the second division HC Dobel in the HockeyAllsvenskan in the preseason . In the 1988 NHL Entry Draft , Forslund was drawn by the Calgary Flames in the fifth round in a total of 85th place.
After Forslund had missed the playoffs in the Swedish Elitserien twice in a row with Leksands, the team was able to move into the finals in the 1987/88 season. In the 1988/89 season Forslund reached the final of the Swedish championship with Leksands, which, however, was lost to Djurgårdens IF .
After two more unsuccessful years with Leksands, Forslund followed the call of the National Hockey League in 1991 and signed a contract with the Calgary Flames. In his first season he managed only five goals and nine assists in 38 games in the NHL . In the following season Forslund got only six times the chance to recommend himself in missions for the Calgary Flames and played a large part of the season with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in the International Hockey League . There he reached a respectable 54 scorer points in 63 games, including 31 goals, but missed the playoff round in the IHL with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles. After the 1992/93 season, Forslund ended the NHL experiment.
After only two seasons overseas, Forslund returned to his old place of work in 1993 and quickly rejoined the storm ranks of Leksands IF. With 16 goals and 17 assists he played at a high level before he became the top scorer of the Elitserien in the following season with 24 goals.
In the summer of 1996 he was looking for a new sporting challenge and switched to the Cologne Sharks in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) for the 1996/97 season . Forslund quickly became a crowd favorite in Cologne due to his open manner and his hobby, rock music. Forslund played well in the DEL, so that he was invited to the DEL All-Star Game in 1998 after his second season . In the game in the Frankfurt ice rink, he scored the opening goal against Team Germany in the first minute, but the All-Stars were ultimately defeated 2: 3 after a penalty shoot-out . The DEL playoffs were less successful for Forslund and the Kölner Haie. After being eliminated three times in the first round between 1997 and 1999, the Haie moved into the final series of the German Ice Hockey League in the 1999/00 season . There Forslund lost the series with the Cologne team 3-1 against the Munich Barons . In the following season the Haie were eliminated again in the quarterfinals, this time against the Hannover Scorpions , after three defeats in a row.
In the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons Forslund also played with the Kölner Haien in the European Hockey League (EHL), the successor to the European Cup . However, the Kölner Haie were eliminated from the competition in the preliminary round in both years. In December 1999 the Kölner Haie made a guest appearance at the prestigious HC Davos invitation tournament , the Spengler Cup . Unbeaten Forslund reached the final with the Haien and defeated the Russian representative HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk 6-2 . Forslund was able to contribute a goal to the tournament success. It was the first tournament victory of a German team since 1964. In the following year, the Haie competed again in the Spengler Cup, but had to be content with third place. Forslund left the Haie after the end of the 2000/01 season and returned to his home club Leksands IF.
After his second return to Leksands in 2001, Forslund played in the Swedish second division. There he reached the Superallsvenskan ( Kvalserien ), the promotion round between the Elitserien and the HockeyAllsvenskan . With six goals and four assists in ten games, he contributed significantly to the success of Leksands IF in the promotion round and the subsequent promotion to the Elitserien. In the 2002/03 season Forslund played another season for Leksands in the Swedish top division before ending his career after 18 years.
After his actual career end, Forslund played for nine games in the third Swedish division, Division 1, for Borlänge HF , for which he was also a few games as a coach behind the gang.
International
Forslund played 112 games in the shirt of the Swedish national team and took part in three world championships with the Tre Kronors from 1994 to 1996. While Forslund had won the bronze medal in 1994 and was thus third in the World Cup, the Tre Kronors made it into the final just one year later at the World Cup in their own country. However, in a memorable game, the Swedes were beaten 5-1 by Finland. The World Cup silver medal is Forslund's greatest success on international ice.
