Thomas Günther (born December 11, 1955 in Bad Ems ) is a German politician (formerly CDU ). From 2006 to 2016 he was a member of the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate .

education and profession

Thomas Günther grew up in a parental home that was influenced by the SPD . Günther voted for the SPD until 1982. Günther attended elementary school in Nierstein until 1971 and then trained as a retail salesman at Latscha in Mainz until 1974 . From 1975 to 1976 he did his military service with the Panzerartilleriebataillon 55 in Homberg (Efze) . From 1977 to 1980 he was district sales manager at Underberg and from 1980 to 1982 district manager at Mohndruck . From 1982 to 2006 he was Area Manager at Wilkinson Sword .

politics

Since Thomas Günther's parents were supporters of the SPD, Günther was shaped early on by social democratic politics. After most of the SPD members were against the NATO double decision and Helmut Schmidt was overthrown by a vote of no confidence in 1982 , he turned away from the SPD shortly before the 1983 federal election . In 1990 Günther became a member of the CDU. From 1990 to 1999 he was chairman of the CDU Nierstein-Schwabsburg-Dexheim and from 1992 to 2001 chairman of the CDU association community Nierstein-Oppenheim . From 1994 to 1999 he was CDU parliamentary group chairman in the Nierstein municipal council, where he was local mayor from 1999 and city mayor from 2013 to 2019. In 2004 Günther became a member of the district council in Mainz-Bingen . After the state elections in 2006 , he moved into the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate on May 18, 2006 and was a member of the European Affairs Committee and the Petitions Committee. Since the state elections in 2011 he was a member of the Interior Committee and the Petitions Committee. Günther was tourism policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group and chairman of the working group for honorary mayors of the Rhineland-Palatinate Association of Municipalities and Cities .

As city mayor, Thomas Günther tried to build business relationships between Nierstein and China . He therefore made several trips to China. An internet blogger revealed that Günther had co-founded the import and export company "Germany Rhein Building and Trading GmbH"; Other founding shareholders included the former SPD district administrator for the Mainz-Bingen district, Claus Schick , a wine merchant from Weinolsheim and two Chinese. Günther gave up his 15 percent stake after three months.

In September 2018, Thomas Günther stated that he did not want to run again for the office of mayor in the local elections in May 2019.

On January 10, 2020, Günther announced his departure from the CDU to the office of the CDU Mainz-Bingen.

Personal

Günther is married and has three children. He is a fan and season ticket holder for Borussia Dortmund .
