Thomas J. "Tom" Barrack Jr. (born April 28, 1947 in Los Angeles ) is a real estate investor and the founder and CEO of Colony Northstar .

Barrack is a good friend and supporter of US President Donald Trump , who already represented Trump in the media. He also served as chairman of Trump's Presidential Inaugural Committee .

Family and education

Barrack's grandparents immigrated to the United States from Lebanon . He graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts. At the university he was a member of the rugby team. He also attended the USC Gould School of Law, where he received his doctorate in law in 1972. He was also editor of the Law Review .

Career

Barracks had his first job at the law firm of Herbert w. Kalmbach, President Richard Nixon's personal attorney . He then worked in Saudi Arabia for the Fluor Corporation , learned Arabic and worked for Saudi princes. Shortly afterwards, at the request of investor Lonnie Dunn, he helped establish diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Haiti , where Jean-Claude Duvalier was ruling.

Barrack served as Assistant Under-Secretary of State for the Home Office under James G. Watt during the Reagan administration.

Barrack was later a director of the Robert Bass group. In 1990 he founded Colony Capital, with investments from Bass and GE Capital and later from Eli Broad , Merrill Lynch and Koo Chen-fu.

He invested about $ 200 million in real estate in the Middle East , $ 534 million in bad German real estate loans and granted photographer Annie Leibovitz a $ 24 million loan. He also owns the Neverland ranch . Through Colony Capital, Barrack holds a $ 25 billion portfolio of assets in the Raffles International hotel chain in Asia , Aga Khan 's former Sardinian domicile , Resorts International Holdings, One & Only Resorts, Atlantis and others.

Barrack is a trustee of the University of Southern California and a member of the university council of Pepperdine University . He also served on the boards of Accor , Kerner, First Republic Bank, Continental Airlines , Korea First Bank and Megaworld Properties & Holdings. The French President Nicolas Sarkozy awarded him France's highest order of merit (Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur ).

As of September 2011, Barrack was listed as the 833 richest person in the world and the 375 richest person in the United States . Its total estimated assets include 1.1 billion US dollars . However, in 2014 he was no longer a billionaire.

In October 2017, Barracks Colony Capital invested in the film production company The Weinstein Company , ostensibly to keep the company liquid in light of reports of sexual misconduct by Harvey Weinstein . Barrack previously owned a share in Miramax , the Weinstein brothers ' previous company.

Barrack used Cayman Islands companies to invest money from pension funds in problem properties and send money to Colony's parent company, according to an organizational chart that appeared in the Paradise Papers documents of the Appleby law firm .

Political activities

Barrack supported Donald Trump in his 2016 presidential campaign. He raised large sums of money for Trump's Rebuilding America Now Super PAC and spoke at the 2016 Republican National Convention .

Personal

Barrack is married and has six children. They live in Los Angeles , California . He also owns a 1,200 acre mountain ranch near Santa Barbara , California. He's a Roman Catholic . In 2016, his wife filed for divorce.
