Thomas J. O'Brien (Bishop)

Thomas Joseph O'Brien (born November 29, 1935 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † August 26, 2018 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Phoenix .

Life

Thomas Joseph O'Brien received after his philosophical and theological training at St. Meinrad Seminary on May 7, 1961, the ordination for the diocese of Tucson . After pastoral work he was, among other things, vicar general.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Phoenix on November 9, 1981 . The Pope personally donated his episcopal ordination on January 6 of the next year; Co-consecrators were Eduardo Martínez Somalo , Substitute of the State Secretariat , and Lucas Moreira Neves OP , Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops . The inauguration in the Diocese of Phoenix took place on January 18, 1982.

John Paul II accepted his early resignation on June 18, 2003, which Thomas O'Brien had to submit following a sexual abuse scandal involving alleged pedophile priests. During the public prosecutor's investigation, he had confessed to having allegedly protected pedophile priests.
