Thomas M. Kuhn

Thomas Michael Kuhn (born September 24, 1966 in Bonn ) is a German journalist. He is a technology reporter in the Innovation & Digital department of Wirtschaftswoche magazine .

Life

Kuhn grew up in Bonn as the son of the journalist Gisbert Kuhn and the Swiss journalist Verena Kuhn-Marti. After high school graduation from Clara-Schumann-Gymnasium and military service in Cologne as well as Tongeren and Maastricht , he attended the Cologne School of Journalism from 1988 . In 1995 he graduated from the University of Cologne with a degree in economics with a social science degree .

Since 1988 he has worked as a freelance journalist for the magazines Capital and impulse , the General-Anzeiger ( Bonn ), the Rheinischer Merkur (Bonn) or the Tages-Anzeiger ( Zurich ) as well as the TV / radio stations WDR and ZDF .

From 1995 on he was the technology editor of the monthly magazine DM ( today Euro ) published by the Handelsblatt publishing group . Together with Matthias von Arnim and Frank Syré, he opened the online portal www.dm-online.de in 1996.

In 2000, Kuhn moved to the sister paper WirtschaftsWoche as an editor for information technology and telecommunications in the Companies & Markets department. Since 2006 he has been a member of the Innovation & Digital technology department, where he was deputy head from 2010 to 2018. Specialties are information technology , internet , IT security , entertainment electronics and new media. In addition, he was responsible for the video blog "Gadget-Inspektor" in the online portal www.wiwo.de for several years.

Kuhn and WirtschaftsWoche colleague Jürgen Berke became the target of spying as part of the Deutsche Telekom surveillance affair. Among other things, the business and private telephone connections of both editors were analyzed in breach of telecommunications secrecy and the telecommunications law in order to be able to uncover the sources of the journalists. Both editors appeared in an internal list of Deutsche Telekom with ten so-called "top explosive journalists" who were considered particularly dangerous by the company.

In 2006, Kuhn was the first recipient of the Saarland IT Journalist Prize in the print media category. In 2012 he was awarded the journalism prize point of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).

Kuhn has been a volunteer firefighter since the early 1980s - currently at the Grevenbroich volunteer fire brigade , for which he also works as press spokesman. Kuhn is the holder of the Fire Brigade Decoration of Honor of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in gold.
