Thomas Mann (politician, 1946)
Thomas Mann (born January 28, 1946 in Naumburg (Saale) ) was a member of the CDU's European Parliament for Hesse in the European People's Party from 1994 to 2019 . For the 2009 European elections , Mann ran as the top candidate for the Hessian CDU. He lives in Schwalbach am Taunus in the Main-Taunus district .
Life and education
After graduating from the New Language High School in 1964, Thomas Mann trained as an industrial clerk. He then worked for 20 years as a junior copywriter in Frankfurt advertising and marketing agencies, conceptual designer and copywriter and finally as creative director.

Thomas Mann was already politically active as a teenager and was involved in the Junge Union . He held a number of management posts, most recently from 1975 to 1979 as a member of the JU Germany Council .
Thomas Mann is a member of the CDU. Here, too, he was active on many boards. From 1986 to 1999 he was a member of the board of the CDU Main-Taunus and from 1991 to 1999 he was deputy district chairman.
From 1985 to 1998 he took part in local politics as a city councilor in his hometown Schwalbach am Taunus. If he was in second place on the list in 2004, he ran as the top candidate for the 2009 European elections.
One focus of his work was the commitment to the interests of the employees. He was Federal Chairman of the Young Workers 'Union from 1975 to 1979, from 1975 to 1985 a member of the Federal Board of the Christian Democratic Workers' Union (CDA) and has been district chairman of the CDA Untermain since 1977.
Functions in the European Parliament
Thomas Mann has been a member of the European Parliament since 1994 and was deputy coordinator in the special committee for employment from 1994–1995. From 1999–2004 he worked for the EPP Group as Vice - Chairman of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs . He is also deputy for the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and a member of the delegation for relations with the countries of South Asia and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation ( SAARC ).
In addition to the interest in employee issues, the commitment to human rights is at the top of Thomas Mann's list of topics. Since 1999 he has been President of the EP's Tibet Intergroup .

Other offices
Thomas Mann works for the idea of European cooperation not only in the European Parliament, but also in the Europa-Union Deutschland . In the Europa-Union he has been the district chairman of Main-Taunus since 1995, 1996–1998 deputy chairman of the Hessen state association of the European Union of Germany and since 1998 chairman of the Hessen state association of the European Union of Germany. Since 1998 he has also been a member of the Presidium of the European Union at federal level and has been Deputy Federal Chairman of the European Union of Germany there since 2003.
From 2004 to 2006 he was a member of the Executive Bureau (Board of Directors) of the Union of European Federalists and has been a member of the Broadcasting Council of the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation since 2004 .

Thomas Mann has been the godfather of the word humanity in the word sponsorship campaign of the German Language Association since 2006 .

- In 2002, Mann received the Federal Cross of Merit for his commitment to human rights and for his socio-political commitment.
