Thomas Röpke (born April 6, 1934 in Bremen ) is a German doctor who, in addition to his medical work, has made outstanding contributions in the social field.

Life

Thomas Röpke is the son of the country doctor and surgeon Eduard Röpke and his wife Waltraud Röpke. He attended elementary school in Thedinghausen . After graduating from high school in Bremen in 1952 , he began studying medicine in Würzburg , which he continued in Freiburg and completed with a state examination and doctorate in Hamburg . After obtaining his license to practice medicine in 1960, Röpke began his professional career at the St. Jürgen Hospital in Bremen (today: Klinikum Bremen-Mitte ) in pediatric surgery . He was so fascinated by this subject that, on the advice of his teacher Fritz Rehbein, he continued to deepen it at the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia / USA.

After his return, Röpke took over his father's general practice in 1967 and at the same time the medical management of the Thedinghausen district hospital (until its closure in 1993).

Thomas Röpke has been married to Sigrid Röpke since 1968, who is also a doctor herself. He has three sons with her: Andreas, Matthias and Christian.

In 1993 he received the plaque of honor from the Lower Saxony Medical Association .

In 2002 Röpke handed over his practice to his son Matthias Röpke, who is now the fourth generation to run it.

Thomas Röpke then performed voluntary medical service as part of a project run by the Senior Expert Service in Tanzania, which is supported by German industry and sponsored by the federal government . On several missions as a surgeon in Marangu -Hospital, a bush hospital on Mount Kilimanjaro , he was able to improve the skills of local doctors and nurses, particularly in obstetrics (introduction to the method of Misgav-Ladach during caesarean section ). In gratitude he received the honorary title Babu Msungu (in Bantu language = white grandfather) from the population .

Social and local political commitment

In 1980 Röpke, for whom riding was an important hobby, founded a therapeutic riding group for disabled children under the umbrella of the Thedinghausen riding club (of which he was chairman from 1997 to 2003) , which he looked after for many years.

He also made a great contribution to the introduction of a comprehensive and exemplary rescue service ( rendezvous system ) in the region, where he himself was an emergency doctor .

In the local politics of the municipality of Thedinghausen and the integrated municipality of Thedinghausen, he was a member of the council from 1972 to 1993 in many committees - so constantly in the school committee. He is a member of the CDU .

In 2011 Thomas Röpke received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his outstanding voluntary work in the social field .
