Thomas Strässle

Thomas Strässle (born April 13, 1972 in Baden , Switzerland ) is a Swiss literary scholar , author and flautist .

Life

Strässle studied German , philosophy and musicology at the University of Zurich from 1992 to 1997 . As a parallel course, he completed a music course from 1993 to 1998 with a major in flute . In 1997 Strässle received a licentiate from the University of Zurich and in 1998 the teaching diploma for music. From 1998 to 2005 Thomas Strässle was a student of the Swiss flautist Aurèle Nicolet . In 1999 he received a concert diploma and a doctorate from the University of Zurich with a dissertation on Grimmelshausen's Simplicissimus Teutsch .

After receiving a Master of Philosophy in European Literature from the University of Cambridge (Gonville & Caius College) in 2000, Strässle worked as a post-doc assistant at the German Department of the University of Zurich until 2005. During this time, in 2003, he took on a guest professorship at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . As part of a research project by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), Strässle worked at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris from 2005 to 2007 . In 2008 Thomas Strässle completed his habilitation at the University of Zurich in the subject of Modern German and Comparative Literature with a paper on the literary history of salt .

From 2008 to 2009 Strässle headed the research focus Intermediality at the Bern University of the Arts . In 2009 he took on a substitute professorship at the University of Zurich. This was followed by an SNSF professorship at the Bern University of the Arts from 2009 to 2013 and a visiting professor at the University of Siena in 2011 . Thomas Strässle has been head of the Y Institute for Transdisciplinarity at the Bern University of the Arts since 2013 (together with Andi Schoon ). In the autumn semester 2013 Strässle was also interim director of the Swiss Literature Institute in Biel and in the academic year 2014/15 he was interim head of the Design & Art department in Bern.

He is also adjunct professor at the German Department and the Department of General and Comparative Literature at the University of Zurich.

Since autumn 2014, Strässle has also been a member of the critics' panel of the literature club on Swiss television SRF and since 2013 President of the Max Frisch Foundation at ETH Zurich.
