Thottea species are upright subshrubs, more rarely also shrubs. The leaves are alternate and have entire margins. The flowers are axillary and arranged in grapes, cymes, umbrella grapes or coils. The bracts are opposite in relation to the flowers. The inflorescence consists of a circle and is radially symmetrical. The calyx tips are fused. The calyx tube is bell-shaped, cup-shaped or urn-shaped. There is usually a thickened ring at its narrowing. The 3 or 4 calyx lobes touch without overlapping. The 8 or 9 stamens are arranged in a circle. There can be 6 to 36, rarely up to 46 stamens. These are arranged in one or two circles. Filaments are short or absent. They are not overgrown, partially overgrown or overgrown to the stylus, so that only the anthers are free. The anthers are bent outwards. The ovary is medium sized. The carpels are completely fused. The stylus are short and consist of 5 to 20 lobes. The scar is on the tip or side of the stylus. The fruits are pod-shaped. The seed coat is wrinkled or punctured transversely.
