The Three Forty Three is a fireboat of the New York Fire Department (NYFD). Together with its sister ship the Fire Fighter II , it is the largest fireboat in North America and one of the largest fireboats in the world. It is stationed at Pier 53 on the Hudson River in western Manhattan and is part of the "Marine 1" unit.

history

Naming

The ship was named in honor of the 343 members of the New York Fire Department who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the rubble of the World Trade Center. Steel from the rubble of the building was also used during construction to commemorate the victims. When naming it, it also played a role that the ships of the NYFD played a special role in the fire-fighting and clean-up work after the terrorist attacks. It was only through them that an adequate water supply could be maintained in the affected area in the first days after the incidents.

Construction and commissioning

The decision to build the two new ships was made after the maintenance and upkeep costs of the older NYFD ships continue to rise. In addition, the ships' technology was already significantly out of date. The John D. McKean , which was then replaced by the Three Forty Three , was over fifty years old. Originally, several small ships were to be purchased, but fears were voiced that the quantities of extinguishing water then available would no longer be sufficient.

The ship design was carried out by Robert Allan Ltd. who were already involved in the construction of fire boats for the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Seattle Fire Department , developed as a completely new class. Eastern Shipbuilding from Panama City , Florida won the tender for the construction in December 2007 . The shipyard has a long tradition in special shipbuilding. Construction of the ship began in May 2008 and was launched on September 11, 2009. After extensive testing, it was put into service on September 12, 2010. The financing of the two sister ship in the amount of 54 million US dollars was taken over by the Department of Homeland Security .

operation area

Together with the other units of Marine 1 , the Three Forty Three is stationed on the Hudson in western New York. The ship monitors New York Harbor and the New Jersey coast . In total, a river basin with a total length of 900 km (560 miles) is covered. The sea area is one of the most frequented sea routes in the world.

Ship technology

The Three Forty Three and her sister ship have been specially adapted to the requirements of the area of operation and the specifications of the NYFD. The ship is moved by four separately controllable propellers, each of which is driven by an MTU type “12V-4000 M70” diesel unit. These deliver 2,000 hp each and enable a top speed of 17.4 knots. In order to improve the maneuverability, the ship has a bow thruster the company Wesmar type Vortex V2-26.

In order to ensure the operational readiness of the ship even after attacks and chemical accidents, it is equipped with complete NBC protection . It has air locks, detectors and a decontamination area. In order to be able to treat the injured as quickly as possible, rooms for triage and wide medical facilities were created.

In order to be able to rescue people from the ferries in the port area as quickly as possible, the Three Forty Three has special ballast tanks in the bow area. This can be used to lower the ship to deck height of the ferries.

Additional features include:

  • A small mission boat
  • A crane with an extendable ladder and a monitor
  • Several hydrants to supply fire fighting equipment

Extinguishing technology

When designing the ship, the pump performance plays a major role. It has four fire extinguishing pumps , each with a capacity of 2,230 m³ per hour (2,230,000 l per hour) at a delivery pressure of around 14 bar. The pumps can only achieve their full performance when the ship is at a standstill, as they are driven by the main engines. If the ship still has to maneuver, two pumps can be used for propulsion and two for pumping water.

On board, the ship has tanks for extinguishing water (3.9 m³) and foam compound (12.5 m³ AFFF foam compound).

The Thre Forty Three has a total of 12 extinguishing monitors:

  • 1 × 3,850 m³ / hour (only water)
  • 6 × 1,200 m³ / hour (water and foam concentrate)
  • 4 × 600 m³ / hour (only water)
  • 1 × 300 m³ / hour (only water, mounted on the ship's crane)

Various hoses and extinguishing fittings are also kept on board.
