Three Girls - Why Doesn't Nobody Believe Us? (Original title: Three Girls ) is a three-part British mini-series . She addresses the 2008 Rochdale abuse cases .

action

The 15-year-old girl Holly comes from a broken home, from which she is increasingly distancing herself emotionally. One day she has to be picked up at the police because she is said to have rioted in a kebab shop and was reported. She endures the questioning without a word and is disturbed - but at the end of the questioning she reveals that she had been raped. In a flashback, the viewer learns what has happened:

Holly is in the middle of puberty, is staying out for a long time and is partying with her new friends. They are sexually permissive and regularly get condoms from health advisor Sara. Holly is still clueless here. Through her friends, she gets to know a kebab shop run by Pakistanis, where they regularly get free food and alcohol. Holly also makes use of the offer without realizing that the operators are getting something in return from the girls. One day the store manager Daddy naturally urges Holly to have sex with him in return for his presents. Holly is shocked, but feels obliged to do the same as her friends and reluctantly endures the rape. Daddy explains to her that from now on she will be his "hooker" and threatens her with death if she "stresses him out". Intimidated and confused, she allows further attacks on the following days. When another Pakistani tries to coerce her into sex a short time later, she breaks out of the shop, damages objects and escapes, whereupon she ends up with the police.

At the end of the flashback, Holly is still sitting with her father at the police station. This takes up the new statements factually, but is cautious and quietly questions Holly's credibility and the correctness of the entire matter. Even Holly's parents cannot understand why she allowed this and did not immediately reveal herself. Holly sinks into herself and withdraws. When the health advisor Sara learns about the incidents, she asks Holly to go to the police again. Here, however, Holly continues to receive little support. The perpetrators are released for lack of evidence.

The police in Manchester are reopening the case. There are now more than 47 known victims and there are said to be even more in other cities. The majority of the victims are intimidated and distraught. They have little hope of justice because they too have found that what has happened is not believed. However, the employees manage to get back to the young women. After many doubts on all sides as to whether an indictment and testimony could have a chance of success, a court case finally ensues in which the young women testify from the witness room and have to face the questions of the defense lawyers.

The nine defendants are all found guilty.

criticism

“The real story that is shown here, in its complex details and its years of development, should not please either the idealistic left-wing liberals or the prejudice-waving right-wing nationalists. Sometimes the answers aren't that easy. And sometimes the truth just has to hurt. "

- DJ Frederiksson : Frankfurter Rundschau from June 14, 2018
