The Straubing Zoo is located in the west of the city of Straubing . Over 2000 individuals of around 200 species currently live in the Straubing Zoo, mainly mammals , birds , reptiles , amphibians and fish . The zoo takes part in several European conservation breeding programs , for example for bison , Amur tigers , African penguins and Balistars . It is a partner zoo of the Species Protection Foundation and a member of various national and international zoo associations and species protection organizations such as WAZA and ZGAP .

location

The zoo, founded in 1937, is embedded in a recreation park and is open all year round. It is bounded in the south-west by the federal highway 8 and the length of which is the Moosmühlbach .

Plants and animal houses

Exotarium

In the tropical house called Exotarium are u. a. Systems for two- toed sloths and marmosets, weaver birds ( textile weavers , Madagascar weavers ), browed smooth-forehead caimans , iguanas, tiger pythons and short-eared elephants . The free-flight hall, inhabited by hornbills, purple starlings and various silver turtles , was renovated and replanted in 2014.

Dannerhaus

The Dannerhaus was named after a longtime patron of the zoo. It was financed by donations. The outdoor aviaries are home to various species of parrots, including sun parakeets , keas and successfully breeding hyacinth macaws . Inside there are facilities for fenneks , Liszt monkeys and common marmosets as well as some terrariums.

One area of ​​the building is used as an exhibition hall for changing exhibitions and as a lecture room for the winter lecture series. A large showcase with souvenirs from protected animals confiscated by customs brings the visitor closer to the problem of “species protection on vacation”.

Aviaries

In the area of ​​the Exotenhaus and Dannerhaus there are two aviaries with griffon vultures and ravens as well as eagle owls . Furthermore, snow owls were kept in an older aviary complex until November 2015 .

Ungulates

There are several enclosures for ungulates in the western part of the zoo. The red deer enclosure is attached to the community facility for bison and fallow deer , which was renovated in 2011 . In 2014, this received a raised wooden visitor pavilion as a gridless view. In another community facility, dwarf donkeys are socialized with racket sheep . With Bactrian camel and alpaca two representatives of the camels are kept. A new outdoor enclosure for yaks was opened in 2012.

In 2009 completed plant life African ostriches , Bohm plains zebras , Watusi cattle and Somali sheep together. In a pavilion built in the African style, the visitor receives information about the animals and ecology of the African savannah.

Big cat house

Siberian tigers and lions are kept in the big cat house and the adjoining outdoor facilities . In the course of the creation of an Asia area with creatively coordinated enclosures for yaks and tigers and a resting place in Nepalese style, the tiger outdoor area was enlarged in 2012–2013 and equipped with viewpoints made of glass. During the renovation, the two tiger brothers Cornelius and Claudius were housed in the Nuremberg zoo. There came Cornelius in October 2012 allegedly in a fight with his brother to death. In the area of ​​the big cat house there is also an enclosure for lynxes . A new construction of the lynx enclosure is planned on the opposite side of the visitor path in place of the old owl aviaries.

Danubium

The Danubium (of Danubius , the Latin name of the Danube) is a wetland, which offers an insight into the habitat of animals on the Danube, for example, cormorant , white pelican , beaver and otter . Raccoons from an animal sanctuary in Hanau have been socializing with the otters since 2014 .

In addition to the zoo storks , the walkable stork enclosure also houses free-flying storks , which find a nesting opportunity in the artificially constructed eyrie.

Danube aquarium

Strictly speaking, the Danube Aquarium is a part of the Danubium. In this building, animal life in the Danube is presented in seven display basins from the source to the mouth. The aquariums hold a total of 100,000 liters. Around 40 species of fish are shown, such as sturgeon , huchen and catfish . There are also Axolotl issued, which, though not native to the Danube, however, best to the larval stage of development of salamanders with their typical outer gill tufts show. In addition, native reptiles and amphibians are shown and bred in the Danube Aquarium, such as Aesculapian snake and dice snake or common toad and fire salamander . The rearing station for newly hatched reptiles and amphibians is also located in the Danube aquarium.

Neolithic farmhouse

The building is a replica of a Neolithic farmhouse based on an archaeological finding that was made not far from the "new" house. It offers space for an exhibition about the origin of the domestic animal breeds and about the Stone Age handicraft techniques.

In the petting zoo, which was redesigned in 2010, next to the adventure playground, visitors can meet goats and Cameroon sheep .

Forest house

In the forest house you can distinguish the different native trees based on their smell and their bark. It offers an insight into the flora of the Bavarian Forest .

Other plants

In the zoo there are other facilities for monkeys , bears , ring-tailed lemurs and penguins . A kangaroo facility opened in 2006 offers space for Bennett kangaroos and emus .
