Timothy John "Tim" Dakin (born February 6, 1958 in Tanzania ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Winchester in the Church of England since 2011 .

Life

Dakin was born in East Africa , where his parents worked as Christian missionaries in Tanzania and Kenya . He attended kindergarten in Nairobi ; he grew up partly in East Africa, partly in various parishes in Great Britain .

He studied theology at the University College of Saint Mark and St John in Plymouth and at King's College of the University of London , where he graduated with a master's in theology. Further, he studied at Christ Church College of Oxford University . In 1993 he was ordained a deacon . In 1994 he was ordained a priest .

Dakin returned to Africa after graduating. From 1993 to 2000 he was principal of Carlile College in Nairobi, a college owned by the Church Army , which had both a theological faculty and an economics faculty (business school) . At the same time he was vicar (assistant curate) at the All Saints' Cathedral in Nairobi.

In 2000 he became General Secretary of the Church Mission Society (CMS); at the same time he served as a pastor (Associate Priest) in the parishes of Ruscombe and Twyford , Berkshire , near Reading . Under Dakin's leadership, the Church Mission Society was officially recognized as a mission society by the Church of England in 2008 ; furthermore mission societies of the Church Mission Society in Africa and Asia emerged .

Since 2001 he has Honorarkanoniker (Honorary Canon Theologian) at the Coventry Cathedral ; his special interest there is mission theology. Since 2009 he has also been Secretary General of the South American Mission Society .

Tim Dakin is an elected member of the General Synod of the Church of England; he represents the Diocese of Oxford there .

In September 2011, his appointment as Bishop of Winchester to succeed Michael Scott-Joynt was officially announced.

On January 25, 2012, Dakin was ordained bishop at St Paul's Cathedral in London by Rowan Williams , Archbishop of Canterbury . He will be inducted into office on April 21, 2012 with a solemn service in Winchester Cathedral .

Membership in the House of Lords

Dakin has been a Spiritual Lord of the House of Lords since 2012 . As Bishop of Winchester , Dakin is one of the Lords Spirituals who, according to the constitution, automatically hold a seat in the House of Lords. He succeeds Michael Scott-Joynt in the House of Lords. He has been an official member of the House of Lords since March 7, 2012.

Private

Dakin is married to Sally Dakin. His wife is a midwife and also an ordained pastor. The marriage produced a daughter, Anna, and a son, Johnny. His private interests are reading , walking , movies and the study of non-Western beliefs. He enjoys spending his vacations with his family on a farm in Kenya.
