Scott-Joynt attended King's College , where he made a Bachelor of Arts in 1965 and a Master of Arts in 1968 . He also attended Cuddesdon Theological College .

He was ordained a deacon in 1967 and a priest of the Church of England in 1968 .

From 1967 to 1970 he was vicar in Cuddesdon and from 1967 to 1971 tutor at Cuddesdon College. He was then from 1971 to 1972 chaplain of Cuddesdon.

1972 to 1975 he was Team Vicar of Newbury , 1975 to 1979 priest in charge in Caversfield, then in Bicester and from 1976 to 1979 in Bucknell. He was pastor of the deanery of Bicester from 1979 to 1981, country dean of Bicester and Islip from 1976 to 1981, canon of St. Albans and from 1982 to 1987 responsible for the formation of candidates for the priesthood and the in-church education and further training in the diocese of St. Albans.

He was Auxiliary Bishop of Stafford from 1987 to 1995. In 1995 he was named Bishop of Winchester to succeed Colin Clement Walter James . He retired in May 2011. Tim Dakin was his successor .

Scott-Joynt married Louise White in 1965. They had two sons and a daughter.

Public work

He caused quite a stir with some of his frank expressions of opinion. His sermon on Christmas 2001 was titled Terror is God's judgment on us . In it he called the events of September 11th , "as cruel and evil as they were", a judgment on raising the living standards of the industrialized nations at the expense of the poor worldwide, and condemned the Middle East policies of Western nations. He was also one of 52 British bishops who wrote an open letter calling for a reform of arms export laws .

In 2000 he chaired a Church of England committee that urged the removal of the prohibition on remarriage of divorced people whose ex-spouse was still alive. The report insisted that the Church of England does not abandon its position that marriage in itself is indissoluble, but recognizes the fact that for many in society, marriages have already become meaningless.

Scott-Joynt underlined, however, that this does not necessarily clear the way for Charles, Prince of Wales to marry Camilla Parker Bowles . In the case of Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles, the civil ceremony was followed by a blessing service in St George's Chapel .

In 2003, he signed an open letter as one of 17 Bishops in the Church of England who rejected the nomination of Jeffrey John , an openly gay priest in a committed relationship, as Auxiliary Bishop of Reading .

Scott-Joynt was one of the best known opponents of gay rights; for example, he voted against the Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations in the House of Lords for failing to take sufficient account of the Church's beliefs, and stated that he would question those members of the clergy in his diocese who are civil partners .

In 2008, Scott-Joynt reiterated the 1991 House of Bishop's decision that same-sex Christians should be welcome members of the ward, but should not be given leadership positions within church administration. "I see no future for the Anglican community and for the Church of England if this doctrine is abandoned."

In 2010 Scott-Joynt criticized that "widespread greed was responsible for the economic recession ". He also condemned the attacks by the Israeli army on the Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip .

Membership in the House of Lords

Scott-Joynt was a member of the House of Lords from 1995 to 2011. Scott-Joynt's political interests included education , local politics , the fight against poverty, public welfare, and issues of marriage and gender roles . The countries Uganda , Rwanda , Burundi , Congo and Burma were of particular interest to him .

Since 2008 he has been Treasurer of the Great Lakes Region and Genocide Prevention Group .
