Life

Smit grew up as the son of a Dutch father and an English mother in Kent and studied archeology and anthropology in Durham . His grandparents owned the Hartford Hall mansion in Cheshire , but they had to sell it. He had no idea about wild plants; In 1975 his wife Candy taught him the most important plants on an excursion in search of megalithic tombs , but even afterwards he was unable to tell the difference between red carnation , purple loosestrife and narrow-leaved willowherb . He spent two years as a county archaeologist before spending ten years as a music producer and songwriter. In 1987 he moved with his family from Brixton to Treveague near Exeter in Cornwall to devote more time to composition and made the acquaintance of John Nelson and Heligan . In 1991 he and Nelson began restoring the Heligan Gardens. He wrote a book about the project. In 1998 he started the Eden Project , which opened in 2001. In addition to his senior roles at the Eden Project and Heligan, Smit is the honorary patron of a number of projects in Cornwall.
