The Timor Telecom (TT) is a telecommunications company in Timor . It originally had the state monopoly on telecommunications in the country. The company is based in the state capital Dili .

The largest owner (as of January 2014) is Portugal Telecom (PT), whose shares are divided between PT, TPT and PT Participações, SGPS (3.05%). Behind TPT is the PT itself with 76%, the Harii Foundation - Sociedade para o Desenvolvimento de Timor-Leste , with 18% , which is connected to the diocese of Baucau , and the Fundação Oriente with 6% . Other shareholders in Timor Telecom are the state (20.59%), VDT Operator Holdings from Macau (17.86%) and the East Timorese businessman Júlio Alfaro (4.49%).

history

Timor Telecom was founded on October 17th, 2002. When it gained independence in 2002, much of the country's telecommunications facilities were still destroyed by Operation Donner in 1999. The GSM network was set up by Timor Telecom. On March 1, 2003, operations began in Dili , Lospalos , Baucau and Pante Macassar . The first shops were also opened in Dili this year. In 2004 the first telecommunications station was opened on Atauro . Shops continued to open in Baucau and Gleno . Shops in Maliana , Suai and Pante Macassar followed in 2005 . In 2006 the first telephone directory appeared in the independent East Timor. In 2007 the first yellow pages followed (also online) and the offer of Voice Mail . In addition to a new SMS center in Dili, another store was opened in Comoro .

In 2009, Timor Telecom signed a contract with the Chinese ZTE to further expand the mobile radio system and to establish wideband CDMA . New stores opened in Colmera (Dili), Vila de Liquiçá , Aileu , Manatuto , Ainaro , Same and Lospalos .

The Timor Telecom monopoly was lifted by the government in 2010 to allow free competition. In the same year the new company logo with the tokeh was introduced and the first Internet community center was opened. For the first time, fiber optic cables were laid in Dili and the news portal Sapo.tl was launched.

In 2012, three new stores were opened in Dili. On June 28, it was announced that PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International ( Telin ) and Digicel Pacific Limited ( Digicel ) had obtained licenses. In 2013 a new call center was opened.

The market penetration with mobile phones is increasing steadily. In 2014, 63% of the population already had a mobile phone. 86% of the country's area is covered by the mobile network, which means that over 470,000 mobile customers can be reached.

Timor Telecom has been offering Wikipedia Zero since August 2014 . TT customers can now access Wikipedia pages on their mobile phones free of charge. Since September, TT has been able to offer high-speed broadband internet access using the O3b network .

Honors

On May 19, 2012, Timor Telecom was awarded the Insígnia des Ordem de Timor-Leste by President José Ramos-Horta .
