Timoteo Maria Ascensi

Timoteo Maria Ascensi OCD (civil Antonio Ascensi ; born February 28, 1759 in Contigliano , † December 6, 1828 in Osimo ) was an Italian bishop .

Life

Antonio Ascensi entered the order of the Discalced Carmelites and took the name Timoteo Maria. He made his profession in the Roman province of the order.

He was ordained a priest on March 6, 1773 . He was professor of theology in the Studium Generale of his order, Traspontina , Rome. On December 29, 1787 he became the perpetual definitor of the Roman province. The chapter of the order elected him superior general . He taught since 1807 as a professor of moral theology at the University La Sapienza and the Seminary of Rieti .

After the papal state was annexed by Napoleon in 1809 , he and other superiors general refused to swear allegiance to Napoleon. That is why they were imprisoned in Castel Sant'Angelo and later deported to Paris . He was exiled to Vouziers and signed a version of the oath of allegiance under pressure, thinking that it had been approved by Pius VII ; then he was allowed to return to Italy. When he found out that the formula he had sworn had not been accepted by the Pope, he publicly withdrew that oath in Rome in 1812 .

Pope Leo XII. appointed him on May 24, 1824 Bishop of Rieti . The Cardinal Vicar , Giacinto Placido Zurla OSBCam , ordained him episcopal on May 27th of the same year in Rome . He resigned from his office on April 24, 1827. On May 21, 1827 he was appointed bishop of Osimo and Cingoli .

He was supposed to be made cardinal in the consistory on December 15, 1828 , but died a few days earlier of a stroke .
