particularities

Bulverket (former structure 170 m long in the lake)

Lake Tingstädeträsk is the second largest lake on the Swedish island of Gotland after Bästeträsk and before Fardumeträsk . Its water level is 44.1 m above sea level. It is located near Tingstäde , on Länsväg 148 from Visby to Fårö , in the north of the island. The lake is drained by the Ireån river, which flows into the Baltic Sea at Ireviken on the west coast. To the northeast of the lake is the File Hajdar nature reserve .

Bulverket

In the 1120s, a square wooden platform with 170 m long sides was built in the middle of the lake. A large number of houses were built on it using various construction techniques. Remnants of this mighty structure can still be found under the water surface and are called the Bulverket . It is not known why this facility was built. An old local expression is Det rökte så som när Tingstädeträsk brann. (Translated: It smoked like when the Tingstädeträsk was burning. ) Maybe that reveals something about how the buildings in the lake were destroyed. The remains of a boat, presumably dated to the 11th century, which were found in the Bulverket, were the starting point for the reconstruction of a Gotland merchant ship. The reconstruction was built in Visby in 1979. It bears the Gutnish name " Krampmacken ", is built in clinker construction, eight meters long and has space for ten rowers.

Landing pad for seaplanes

In the period between the World Wars, the lake was used as an airfield for seaplanes , among other things to enable stopovers on the Stockholm - Gdansk route .

fauna

The Tingstädeträsk is one of Gotland's most biodiverse lakes. The lake includes perch , pike , crucian carp , ruff , roach , rudd , tench and bleak . There used to be even eels in the lake. Also crayfish occur.

free time activities

There is relatively extensive recreational fishing in the lake. The fishing licenses are sold by Gotland's military commandos fiskeklubb .

In the north of the town of Tingstäde there is a well-frequented bathing area, which, along with the bathing area in Bäste träsk, is one of the best bathing opportunities in inland waters on Gotland.
