Tom Buk-Swienty
Tom Buk-Swienty (born July 19, 1966 in Eutin ) is a Danish historian , journalist and writer who was awarded the Søren Gyldendal Prize in 2010 .
Life
After attending school, Buk-Swienty studied history with a focus on the history of the United States and graduated with a master's degree . He then became a correspondent for the Weekendavisen newspaper in the USA and a lecturer at the University of Southern Denmark .
In 1999 he made his writing debut with Amerika Maxima (1999), a travelogue about a road trip he made during his stay in the USA . In 2005 the book Den ideelle Amerika was published about the American photographer and writer Jacob August Riis from Denmark .
For his 2008 published book Slagtebænk Dybbøl (dt .: slaughter chaff ) over battle of Dybbøl on April 18, 1864, he received the 2009 Årets Faglitterære Pris for the best historical reference book . The book served as a template for the eight-part television series 1864 on the Danish broadcaster DR1 , which premiered on October 12, 2014. A movie is also planned. In 2010 Dommedag Als followed on the defeat in the battle for the northern Schleswig island of Alsen on June 29, 1864 and the later bitter peace settlement for Denmark after the German-Danish War . Both books became bestsellers because of their exciting presentation as well as the reinterpretation of this epoch from the history of Denmark . In 2010 he was awarded the Søren Gyldendal Prize for these books.
In August 2010 it was announced that Buk-Swienty in the private correspondence of King Christian IX. He discovered letters to the Prussian King Wilhelm I , in which the Danish king expressed the wish that Denmark should be admitted to the German Confederation . So Christian IX hoped. after the defeat in the German-Danish War to be able to preserve the unity of the kingdom including the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg. However, Wilhelm's Chancellor Otto von Bismarck refused, probably in order not to create yet another source of conflict and not to worry France.
