Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent is the fifth installment in the Splinter Cell series , which was released in 2006 for numerous platforms. The title was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Shanghai and published by Ubisoft . It should, according to Ubisoft originally already end of April 2006, around a year after the release of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory will be published . However, due to development delays, the release date has been postponed several times. In 2019 the old-gen (Xbox) version of the game was released for the Xbox 360 . The old-gen and new-gen versions differ slightly in plot and style of play.

Splinter Cell: Double Agent takes up the plot of the predecessor Splinter Cell: Essentials and extends it. The main character, agent Sam Fisher, infiltrates a terrorist organization and tries to crush it from within. To do this, he has to earn her trust by doing jobs for her. However, the player must be careful not to act as a terrorist so much that his client, the NSA , classifies him as a traitor. At the same time he has to make sure that his camouflage is not exposed.

Gameplay

Splinter Cell: Double Agent , like its predecessors, is a stealth shooter . The player takes on the role of the American agent Sam Fisher. In contrast to most other shooters, the decisive factor in completing missions is not so much eliminating opponents but rather inconspicuously moving. The player receives ammunition at the beginning of each mission, but this is rather tight. To do this, he is equipped with various viewing devices, e.g. B. a night vision device or a thermal imaging device and cameras.

The player is sent by his client to different areas of activity, where he must or can complete various goals, mandatory and optional. As with all Splinter Cell titles, the levels are rather dark. The player has a display that tells him how visible he is to his opponents. If the player is in illuminated areas, he is easily visible. On the other hand, if it hides in dark niches, it is hardly seen by its opponents.

A major innovation compared to earlier Splinter Cell titles is the mission design. For the first time, the player is able to choose between two clients, the NSA and the JBA. The player has a certain trust in both factions. Since both factions are enemies, the trust of one faction usually falls when that of the other increases. The player must always make sure to enjoy trust on both sides, otherwise either his cover is blown or they see him as a traitor.

action

The year is 2008. Sam Fisher is currently on a mission to find out about a trade in an unknown weapon at a geothermal power plant in Iceland. During the mission, Lambert breaks off the mission of Fisher and his colleague Hamsa. Sam later learns of his daughter Sarah's fatal car accident. Deeply affected by this news, he proves unable to continue his job. Irving Lambert is forced to suspend his elite spy from duty. A few painful months later: Sam fails to come to terms with the traumatic events. In order to find support, he asks Lambert for a new assignment: Sam offers Sam the position of NOC (Non Official Cover Agent).

The main target is to infiltrate a terrorist group called the John Brown's Army ( JBA ). This time it's about assuming a new identity and getting information from within - as a double agent.

After a staged bank robbery that kills 15, Fisher is sentenced to multiple life sentences and taken to Elsworth, Kansas Penitentiary. There he should befriend JBA member Jamie Washington and escape with him from prison in order to get the trust of the JBA and to be accepted there. The two then hijack a news helicopter and use it to escape to the headquarters of the JBA, a terrorist organization headed by Emile Dufraisne, which operates directly from American land.

In Splinter Cell: Double Agent you can accept assignments from NSA government officials as well as from the terrorist side. However, the gray areas in the area of tension between law and justice are mixed up every now and then in a diffuse way. The player has to decide for himself which faction he wants to approach and how close. Depending on his approach and the course of the last mission, there are a total of three different game outcomes, which end with either Fisher's arrest, Fisher's escape or Fisher's successful return to the NSA.

Differences between the old-gen and new-gen versions

The game has two makers who are not based on a common plot and style of play. Ubisoft Montreal was responsible for the old platform ( PlayStation 2 , Wii , Xbox and Gamecube ) and Ubisoft Shanghai for the then new platform (PC, Xbox 360 , PlayStation 3 ). However, the modified Unreal Engine 2.5 game engine was used in both versions.

action

The plot is only superficially the same in both versions. The course of the individual missions and their goals make the big differences in the plot. While the old-gen version has a train mission, the new-gen version has a Shanghai mission. However, in the end, both missions do not play a major role. The missions are also structured differently and have different sections and objectives. Sometimes the missions are shorter in one version, sometimes they are longer. A clear feature of this in both aspects is the beginning of the game. In the old platform, you deal with the JBA right from the start, with New-Gen only after Fisher found out that his daughter was dying and six months later the JBA was only suspected by the NSA. The missions are also arranged differently and can only be played earlier or later depending on the version.

The biggest difference, however, is the end of the plot. With the old platform you have the same ending (with Fisher's escape), regardless of the fulfilled or canceled objectives or playing styles. With the new platform, however, three different endings, which also depend on the player's style of play. In the next part of the series , however, only one of the three endings - namely with Fisher escape - and the decision that Fisher killed Lambert with his own hand - continues.

Style of play

The style of play separates the two versions the most. The old platform offers a more extensive HUD that allows you to work much better and more flexibly. You have the display that shows how visible you are and even a sound level, which the new platform doesn't have. Instead, it only has a single indicator on the bottom left of the screen and on Fisher's gear that glows green (visible), yellow ((possibly) visible), or red (detected). It flickers when it is red. This type of HUD is the most criticized by players because it makes it difficult to find cover and it is not clear whether the guards can only see you, but not detect you, or at least be discovered.

The confidence indicator is also different. The old platform shows them by means of a bar and an indicator that shifts to the left (JBA) or right (NSA) depending on the behavior and required decisions. It is ideal if it is relatively in the middle. With the new platform, you have two bars for both organizations, which are filled by the behavior of the player or empty if the instructions are ignored. It is ideal if both are full by fulfilling all goals of both sides.
