Tom Rachman

Tom Rachman (born 1974 in London ) is a British-Canadian journalist and writer.

Life

Rachman grew up in Vancouver, Canada. He studied film at the University of Toronto and journalism at Columbia University with a Masters degree . From 1998 he worked as an editor for the Associated Press (AP) in New York City and intermittently as a reporter in India and Sri Lanka. In 2002 he went to Rome as an AP foreign correspondent . Since 2006 Tom Rachman has worked part-time as an editor for the International Herald Tribune in Paris.

The Imperfectionists is his first novel and was published in ten countries at the same time. For his novel debut, he received one of the highest advances in the United States that has been paid for a first work in the last ten years. Brad Pitt bought the film rights. The book has received numerous reviews, including in Germany by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Süddeutsche Zeitung . Christopher Buckley wrote about The Imperfectionists in The New York Times : "This first novel by Tom Rachman [...] is so good that I had to read it twice [...]." The New York Times described it as equally " Love letter and epitaph on the world of newspapers ”. The Focus wrote: "He is creating a memorial to the old world from paper, printer's ink and smoke-filled editorial rooms, from breaking news, hasty interviews and annoying line dragging."

In Germany, the journalist novel was also published in an abridged version as an audio book , read by Heikko Deutschmann .

After the worldwide success of The Imperfectionists, Rachman returned to London from Rome to devote himself entirely to writing.

His second novel, The Rise and Fall of Great Powers , was published in 2014. Shortly after its publication, the novel sparked wide press coverage.

In 2017, Basket of Deplorables was released , a volume with stories about the USA under Trump, which was also on the shortlist for the Edge Hill Prize for best collection of stories .

His third novel The Italian Teacher (2018) was nominated for the Costa Book Award 2018 in the Roman category.
