Tomb Raider III - Adventures of Lara Croft (translated roughly: The Adventures of Lara Croft ) is a video game from the Tomb Raider series . It was developed by Core Design and was released for PlayStation and PC in winter 1998 . Lara has learned a lot again. She can now crawl, sprint for a short moment, and shimmy around the ceiling in certain places. Their arsenal was supplemented by a Desert Eagle , an MP5 and a powerful rocket launcher . The automatic pistols from the second part were not integrated into the game; the M16 was also dispensed with.

action

At the beginning of Tomb Raider III, Lara has to find an artifact called the "Infada Stone".

To do this, she travels to the jungle of India and fights her way through the green hell. She discovers a research camp that is only inhabited by one researcher. He claims that his colleagues all died in a temple. Lara goes to the temple and finds her dead colleagues there. When she leaves the temple, she finds the distraught researcher near the Ganges who has the artifact stuck in his chest. He tries to kill the archaeologist . However, Lara escapes and begins the chase. Ultimately, she finds the villain, defeats him and can get the "Infada stone".

Lara thinks she's done the job until she learns there are three more stones that she should find. So Lara goes looking for it.

In Nevada, Lara must first cross the desert. At the end of the first level, she jumps a quad bike into a high-security wing , where she is arrested and loses her weapons. Locked in a cell, she has to free herself skillfully and also let the other prisoners out so that she is protected from the ruthless staff. She has to do almost a whole level without weapons until she finds something in an armory. Then she gets into a truck and drives to Area 51 as a stowaway .

Once there, she has to skillfully fight her way through lasers and a network of surveillance cameras until she finally discovers "Element 115" in a UFO.

In rainy London, Lara has to fight her way over the rooftops to find the crazy businesswoman Sophia Leigh . On her way, Lara also comes to an abandoned subway station ( Aldwych ). In the Catacombs of London , Lara learns that Sophia is conducting secret experiments on innocent people in order to achieve immortality. Lara Croft finds Sophia in her office, but she does not voluntarily give up the artifact "The Eye of Isis" . Therefore Lara has to follow her and kill her with a fatal electric shock in order to get to the magic stone.

Lara finds another artifact on the South Sea Islands; here she has to deal with cannibals and dinosaurs and kayak down a raging river. In an old temple she finally finds a ruler who has the “ora dagger” that she wants. She fights against a powerful opponent and receives the Ora dagger.

Then Lara makes her way to the Antarctic, where she wants to hand over the four artifacts to her client. She wants to hear from him that he will not abuse them. However, he has other plans and can escape with the artifacts. Lara takes up chase and drives around an old mine. Eventually she finds the forgotten city of Tinnos and fights her way through giant wasps and mutants to get into the cave of the meteorite. Here your adversary has already put the artifacts into place and transformed into a gigantic spider through their released forces. Lara takes up the fight and retrieves the artifacts. Then she can finish off the spider. At the end she fights her way out of the cave and steals a helicopter so that she can fly home again.

When you have discovered all the secrets in the game, you can end up playing a level in London.

Tomb Raider III: Lost Artifact (Director's Cut)

Lara learns about a fifth stone, which also comes from the meteorite , and of course she wants to own it. That is why she makes her way to Scotland , a zoo and a research station, among other places . Ultimately, she finds Sophia Leigh , who she already knows from the main part and who survived the electric shock that occurred there. She fights them again to get Rathmore's hand . There are PC demo versions of individual levels that can be downloaded for free. For the full version you need the Premier Collection of the game Tomb Raider 3. The Lost Artifact is included here with the main game as a separate second CD. The addon was also available as a single CD.

Game principle and technology

For the third part of the Tomb Raider series, Core Design has developed a reflection system that is used to represent weather effects (e.g. snow) more realistically. In addition, the revised graphics engine can display dynamic lighting effects that ensure a dense atmosphere in the levels.

For the first time in the series, the player can choose - albeit to a limited extent - the order in which he wants to play the levels. The game always begins in India and ends in Antarctica ; in between, the player can freely choose whether Lara should first travel to Nevada , London or a South Sea island . The sequence of the levels in the respective region is, however, fixed.

Differences in publications

There are various differences between the PlayStation version and the PC. In the PlayStation version you can only save in the vicinity of save points, which are blue crystals floating above the ground, while in the PC version you can collect green crystals instead of the blue ones, which heal Lara immediately. When publishing to a PC, the game status can be saved anywhere and anytime.

Production notes

In the German version of the game, the red blood splatters on hits have been replaced by purple sparks. Likewise, the clouds of blood were colored purple when harpoon hits and attacks by piranhas in the water.

Reviews

Tomb Raider III received mostly positive reviews. The Metacritic review database aggregates 14 reviews for the PlayStation version with an average of 76.

A frequent criticism of the trade magazines was a lack of innovation compared to the predecessor.

"With Lara's third adventure, the developers seem to be slowly running out of breath."

- Chris Peller : Power Play

The PC Action praises the vast game worlds, which can be selected largely free and offer a long season. In addition, usable vehicles, good animations and water effects and the dramatic music are highlighted positively. In addition to the lack of innovations, the high level of difficulty, weak graphics and a presentation of the story in need of improvement are criticized.

"The bottom line is a piece of software entertainment that is worth playing and that does not win any innovation awards, but still offers a lot of games for the money."

- Harald Fränkel : PC Action

The testers of the PC player praised the low hardware requirements for the time and the splendid lighting effects. Despite the outdated graphics and controls, the game is varied and exciting, but the number of opponents is too low. Richard Löwenstein from the game magazine PC Joker , on the other hand, criticizes the fact that the opponents "seem to grow out of the ground".

Sales figures

By April 2009, the game is said to have sold around six million times.
