Tonasket is a city ( City ) in Okanogan County in the State of Washington . At the United States Census 2010 the population was 1,032 people.

history

Tonasket was officially recognized as a local authority on December 16, 1927 . The city is named after Chief Tonasket of the Okanogan people , a local leader from the region who assumed the status of Grand Chief of the American Okanogan after the border between Canada and the United States was established by the Oregon Treaty in 1846 and earlier by Chief Nicola, who lived north of that border, held leadership in US territory vacant.

Tonasket is a town on the east bank of the Okanogan River in north central Okanogan County. The US Highway 97 , the main north-south route in central Washington, divides the city on his way to the Canadian border, the 33 km (20 mi) runs north. The Washington State Route 20 turns east of 97 in the 6 th Street and continues through the state. The city is bordered to the north by Siwash Creek , to the south by Bonaparte Creek and to the west by the Okanogan River .

Tonasket, the location of a post office since 1901, was parceled out in 1910 and incorporated into the county in 1927. It acts as a focal point for the agricultural and forestry industries in north-central Okanogan County. It is the location of three major fruit storage and processing operations as well as the offices of the Tonasket Ranger District of the Okanogan National Forest .

Many descendants of the pioneer families still reside in Tonasket and the surrounding areas and are interested in the preservation and transmission of their historical legacies. One son of these families, Walter H. Brattain , grew up on a cattle ranch near Tonasket, completed his school days in Tonasket and shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics with William Shockley and John Bardeen for inventing the transistor .

Tonasket is at 48 ° 42'20 "N / 119 ° 26'19" W at an altitude of 400 meters. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city occupies an area of ​​2.07 km²; it is all about land.

The Tonasket Municipal Airport (W01) opened in July 1990 to the public. It has a paved runway 931 meters long and is 3.3 km (2 mi) northwest of the city on an area of ​​40 hectares.

2010 Census

As of the 2010 census , there were 1,032 residents, 453 households, and 234 families in Tonasket. The population density was 498.1 per km². There were 511 housing units at a mean density of 246.6 per km². The population consisted of 81.9% whites , 0.6% Afro-Americans , 2% Indians , 1% Asians , 11.2% from other "races" and 3.3% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 16.5% of the population.

Of the 453 households, 24.3% had children under the age of 18, 33.6% were run by married couples living together , 12.4% by single mothers and 5.7% by single fathers; 48.3% were non-families. 42.6% of households were singles and 25% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size 2.9 people.

The median age in the city was 47.5 years. 19.3% of the population were under 18, 9.8% between 18 and 24, 17.7% between 25 and 44, 27% between 45 and 64 and 26.3 65 years or older. 47.9% of the population were men and 52.1% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2010 census , there were 994 residents, 420 households, and 223 families in Tonasket. The population density was 599.7 per km ². There were 482 housing units at an average density of 290.8 per km². The population consisted of 88.03% white , 0.4% African American , 1.41% Indian , 0.7% Asian , 0.1% Pacific islander , 7.75% from other "races" and 1.61% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 10.16% of the population.

Of the 420 households, 26.9% had children under the age of 18, 37.6% were run by married couples living together and 11.4% by single mothers; 46.7% were non-families. 40.2% of the households were singles and 21.9% were single persons over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.89 people.

The median age in the city was 45 years. 22.7% of the population were under 18, 6.4% between 18 and 24, 20.8% between 25 and 44, 23% between 45 and 64 and 27, 65 years or older. There were 80.4 men for every 100 women, and 78.6 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.

All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 23,523 and that of families was US $ 28,393. Men had a median income of US $ 28,542 compared to US $ 22,250 for women. The per capita income was US $ 13,293. About 22% of families and 23.1% of the total population lived below the poverty line ; this affected 26.7% of those under 18 and 9.5% of those over 65.
