The Datong – Puzhou Railway , also known as the Tongpu Railway , is a railway line in the Shanxi Province of the People's Republic of China . It was built in the 1930s and is used for both passenger and freight traffic. In 2012 it was the railway line with the highest freight traffic in China.
Course and traffic volume
The railway line begins in Datong in the north of Shanxi Province. Shanxi is the Chinese province with the largest deposits of coal, most of which is transported by rail. Shanxi is home to 15 of the 20 largest freight stations in China. Datong has the second largest freight yard in China and is the starting point of the Datong-Qinhuangdao railway line to the east . The section from Datong to the capital of Shanxi, Taiyuan, is particularly frequented by freight trains . In the north of Taiyuan there are numerous industrial plants that are connected to the Datong-Puzhou railway line via rail connections . Around 90 million tons of coal are loaded annually in Taiyuan , which makes Taiyuan the largest rail freight hub in China . The southern part of the route leads from Taiyuan via Jiexiu , Linfen and Yuncheng to Puzhou, a district of Fenglingdu on the southern border of Shanxi. In Puzhou there is a connection to the railway line to Xi'an .
