Tony Tough and the Night of Roasted Moths

action

Tony Tough is an unsuccessful, know-it-all private detective whose companion Pantagruel - a purple tapir whom Tough previously thought was a dog - is kidnapped one evening. The ransom note left behind lays a trail to the nearby amusement park. Tough goes on a search.

Game principle and technology

Tony Tough is a point-and-click adventure game . From Sprites composite characters act before hand-drawn, some animated scenes. The player can use the mouse to move his character through the locations and use the mouse buttons to initiate actions that allow the character to interact with his environment. Tony can find objects and apply them to the environment or other objects and communicate with NPCs . As the story progresses, more locations will be unlocked.

Production notes

Work on the game began in 1997 under the working title "Roasted Moths". Originally it should appear for both the Amiga and the PC. Most of the animations were created on the Amiga. However, when this became less important during the development work, the Amiga version was abandoned. The game was first presented in December 1997 at the multimedia fair Saloon.bit. There are some differences between the previous and the final version:

  • Pantagruel was originally supposed to be called "Fart" and had its own nameplate on Tony's office door.
  • The user interface worked differently: with the right mouse button, an action window was opened that comprised seven actions and provided access to the inventory. The final version uses an interface that was inspired by The Curse of Monkey Island .

The German version is both by the controversial StarForce - copy protected against duplication and to an unlock code provided. In March 2017, the US company night dive Studios released a version of the game, which means the ScummVM - Engine can be run on modern PCs, through the distribution platform Steam .

Meta-ratings
Database Rating
Metacritic 68

Tony Tough and the Night of Roasted Moths received mixed reviews. The Metacritic review database aggregates 9 reviews to an average of 68. At the time of publication, reviews were already loud that the first part of the Tony Tough series was technically out of date. The developers therefore announced that they would upgrade the German version, which was ultimately limited to sharply defined background images. The German setting, on the other hand, received good reviews, which is not only considered suitable, but also includes a number of well-known comedians such as Markus Maria Profitlich , Ingo Appelt , Marco Rima and Tanja Schumann .

  • gamigo.de: " Very good "
  • Adventure archive / corner / meeting: " Recommendation "
  • giga.de: " Graphics, story and puzzles are all more than good "
  • Computer Bild Spiele: " ... funny dialogues and the successful setting of the characters delight friends of classic adventure games à la Monkey Island "

Other magazines were disappointed by the lack of complexity of the game and the old-fashioned graphics, so that Tony Tough got a Metacritic score of 68 overall .

Tony Tough 2 - The smart ass returns

action

1953: 13-year-old Tony Tough grows up in Washington, New Mexico , where a UFO landing allegedly took place in neighboring Roswell just a few years earlier . When the next house is broken into and the old resident dies of a heart attack, Tough feels called to work as a detective for his first case. After some investigations, he suspects that the death and the UFO landing are related.

overview

In contrast to its predecessor, the second part was designed in 3D graphics. The backgrounds are rendered rigid images, while the characters, and some objects, are real-time animated 3D models. This time, a retroverted adventure atmosphere was dispensed with, instead the developers tried to pursue their own style, which is based on the art décorative of the 1930s and 1940s. Again the German dubbing got good reviews, this time including Sky du Mont , Peter Lohmeyer , Tanja Schumann and Jasmin Wagner . In other respects too, the reviews were mostly positive.
