Topi Torsten Sarparanta (born May 25, 1975 in Kouvola ) is a former Finnish Nordic combined athlete. He started for Finland in the 1998 Winter Olympics .

Career

As an 18-year-old, Topi Sarparanta made his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup . On December 11, 1993, he started at the World Cup in St. Moritz in the Gunderson competition and finished seventh in his first race. In the 1993/94 season he took part not only in the World Cup, but also in the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in the Austrian municipality of Breitenwang . There he started together with Simo Jääskeläinen and Hannu Manninen . The trio won the silver medal behind the Norwegian team and ahead of the host Austria. After his achievements in the season he was nominated by the Suomen Olympic Committee for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , Norway . He started there both individually and in the team. After he had only finished 20th in the individual, he started together with Jari Mantila and Tapio Nurmela for Finland in the team competition and finished in a poor eighth place. After the Olympic Games, he was able to achieve his best result in the World Cup. At the World Cup in Sapporo , he finished 5th. He was able to occupy this place two more times in the Nordic Combined World Cup. In the overall World Cup of the 1993/94 season , he finished 13th with a total of 334 points. That placement was his best in his entire career.

On November 16, 1995, the B-World Cup started in Taivalkoski , where he was able to achieve his first and only victory in the B-World Cup. He secured victory in front of his compatriot Teemu Summanen and the Frenchman Étienne Gouy . On January 20, 1996 in Liberec and on February 23, 1996 in Trondheim , he was again able to occupy fifth place in the World Cup. At the end of the season he had 394 points more points than in the 1993/94 season. In the overall ranking of the 1995/96 season , this number of points was only enough for 22nd place.

On December 17, 1997 he finished on the podium for the second time in his career in the B World Cup. At the Home B World Cup in Vuokatti he only had to admit defeat to Russian Dmitri Sinizyn . The 1997/98 season was his last season in the Nordic Combined World Cup , and in the overall standings he finished 44th with 202 points. In the 1998/99 season he was again able to cause a sensation in the B World Cup. At the B World Cup in the Estonian municipality of Otepää on December 18, 1998, he finished second behind Michael Gruber from Austria and ahead of his compatriot Tony Kilponen .
