Tornado is a Finnish thrash metal and sleaze rock band from Tampere that was formed in 2010.

history

Unhappy with life as a tour manager, singer superstar Joey Severance decided to start his own band in 2010. Together with the Dutch guitarist Michiel "Big Maaaan" Rutten, he began to write his first songs in his bedroom. With the help of the former Born-from-Pain drummer Roel Klomb, the duo traveled to Belgium to record their first demo in the studio of Brujeria guitarist Chris Paccou . However, the demo never appeared publicly and was never sent to a label. After a few months, another demo was recorded under the same circumstances and sent to labels, whereupon the band reached a record deal with Listenable Records in November 2010 . Still without a proper line-up, Severance contacted Amoral , a band he was friends with . With the guitarist Benjamin "Daddy B." Varonen, the bassist Pekka Johansson aka Johnny Wow and the drummer Juhana "Starvin Marvin '" Karlsson, who all worked for Amoral, they went to the Abyss Studio in Parlby, Sweden , where with the debut album Amsterdamn, Hellsinki was recorded by producer Peter Tägtgren . After the release in 2011, the band split from the label because they were not satisfied with the collaboration. Meanwhile, Rutten left the cast because he was moving to his girlfriend in Israel . Then Severance, who had stayed with the band mostly in the Netherlands, went back to Finland.

Within two months of his arrival, Severance placed an ad in a local newspaper looking for suitable musicians. The first to answer him was the guitarist Tuomas Leskinen aka Tommy Shred, then the bassist Henri Soisalo aka Henry Steel and the drummer Jani Niemelä. Since no other guitarist could be found, Leskinen brought their friend Timo Pönni aka Tim Damion into the line-up. This was followed by local appearances with Lazy Bonez but also a few with Korpiklaani . Severance also contributed guest vocals on the latter band's album Manala . The band also worked on new songs, which were recorded in the form of the album Black President in Studio 33 in Kuopio with producer Kimmo Hamalainen . After the recordings, Niemelae left the cast due to persistent wrist problems. Niko McNasty replaced him. After several months, the band signed a record deal with the Italian label WormHoleDeath . a. Frostbitten Kingdom had already released a phonogram. The album was released in August 2015.

style

Marc Halupczok from Metal Hammer described the music as a mixture of Thrash Metal and Sleaze Rock. Above all, the vocals are reminiscent of Sleaze Rock. In an interview with him, superstar Joey Severance stated that this unusual mixture can be traced back to his childhood, since at that time no distinction was made between hardcore punk , thrash metal or glam rock or glam metal . One of his earliest influences was Kiss . Lyrically Amsterdamn, Hellsinki orientate themselves more towards Thrash Metal, so act 3 of 8 from the earth. Halupczok Amsterdamn, Hellsinki had reviewed an issue earlier . The album offers a mixture of Thrash Metal, Punk and a few modern sounds. The group also makes use of tempo changes. Most characteristic, however, is the vocals, which, like Joey Belladonna or John Connelly, do not fit into Thrash Metal.
