Torsten Gebhard (born March 12, 1909 in Siegburg ; † May 12, 1994 ) was a German folklorist , art historian and monument conservator . From 1963 to 1974 he headed the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and played a key role in the technical development of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act of 1973.

Life

He spent his childhood in Munich, Höchst and Bad Soden . From 1919 he attended high school in Bonn and from 1921 to 1928 the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich. Then from 1928 to 1933 he took up studies at the Technical University , the State School for Applied Arts and the Art Academy in Munich , which he completed in 1933 with the state examination for the higher teaching post in the subjects of drawing and shorthand. As a trainee teacher at the Rupprecht secondary school in Munich , he took leave of absence in 1934 for his dissertation. In 1935 he received his doctorate under Hans Karlinger with the thesis “Folk furniture painting in Old Bavaria. With special consideration of the Tölz Kistler trade ”.

He trained for the inventory of art monuments and took part in courses on traditional research. As a scholarship holder of the Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft he was assigned to the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in the summer of 1936 , where he then worked for four decades. The first years in the state office were devoted to the inventory of art monuments in some districts of the Palatinate .

In the spring of 1940 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht , after his military service in World War II and two years of American imprisonment in 1947 he came back as an employee of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, and in 1948 he was appointed curator . There he rose in 1958 to the state curator and deputy of the general curator Heinrich Kreisel , whose successor he took over on July 1, 1963. During his eleven years of management activity, there were decisive developments in the state office: transition to short inventories ( Bavarian art monuments ), introduction of monument lists with succinct short descriptions, because the extended concept of monument so required, and the ensemble descriptions .

Since 1962 he was an honorary professor at the University of Munich and trained folklorists and art historians.

With him, a new era in Bavarian monument preservation began, as he played a key role in the preparation and professional development of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act of October 31, 1973, alongside Ministerialrat Wolfgang Eberl and Member of Parliament Erich Schosser . It was the first monument protection law in the Federal Republic of Germany and has proven itself to this day.

His son is the prehistorian Rupert Gebhard (* 1961).
