The 2012 Tour de France prologue took place on June 30th and was a 6.4 km individual time trial in the center of the Belgian city of Liège . The route profile was largely flat with a small increase in the last third of the route. All 198 registered drivers started.

route

The route was almost identical to that of the 2004 prologue , won by Fabian Cancellara . The start was on avenue Rogier at the height of Parc d'Avroy. Then the route led northwards over the Boulevard d'Avroy and the Boulevard de la Sauvenière. She then followed along the Meuse . The route continued via Place Saint-Lambert back to Boulevard d'Avroy and to the finish on Boulevard de la Sauvenière.

Race course

The first driver to tackle the race was Tom Veelers from the Netherlands , who set a time of 7:47 minutes. Simon Gerrans immediately undercut this by five seconds. His lead didn't last long either, as the Ukrainian champion Andrij Hrywko (who later came tenth) was a full 14 seconds faster. Hrywko led the ranking for over an hour until he was beaten by Brett Lancaster by four seconds (7:24 min). Edvald Boasson Hagen , who started a little later, undercut Lancaster's time by a few hundredths of a second.

The French champion Sylvain Chavanel set a new best time of 7:20 minutes , which lasted up to the last ten starters. In the meantime, Bradley Wiggins was six seconds behind Chavanel, but was able to overtake him by half a second in the second half of the course. Peter Sagan and Tony Martin , who were both favorites, lost valuable seconds due to a driving mistake or a defect and fell behind in the ranking. Fabian Cancellara , who started second last, undercut Wiggins' time by more than seven seconds and thus won the prologue.

Scoring

The only points evaluation of the prologue corresponded to the top positions in the final classification.
