route

The start was in Saronno and the first 55 kilometers are flat. This was followed by Orino and Motta Rosa . after 77 kilometers you reach your destination in Varese for the first time . Then another nine laps of 12.8 kilometers around Varese had to be conquered. The lap included two climbs.

Race course

At the start of the race, a group of six led by Daniel Turek (Czech Republic / Israel Cycling Academy) and Diego Rubio (Spain / Caja Rural) pulled away. The group was able to gain a maximum of six lead. 40 kilometers before the finish, the lead of the leading group was only about 60 seconds, Pierre-Roger Latour (France / AG2R) attacked from the field with two other drivers and closed the gap forwards. Six drivers were represented at the top again after three drivers had dropped out of the former top group. 30 kilometers from the finish, Paweł Poljański (Poland / Bora) attacked from the peloton with two other riders, including Carlos Verona (Spain / Orica). The trio was also able to close the gap to the front. 16 kilometers from the finish, Verona attacked from the escape group and was able to break away. About nine kilometers from the finish line, all of the outliers were caught.

On the last climb of the day, about 2.5 kilometers from the finish, Vincenzo Nibali (Italy / Bahrain-Merida) and Thibaut Pinot pulled away. Behind the two there was a larger group, from which Alexandre Geniez (France / AG2R) and Diego Ulissi (Italy / UAE Team Emirates) attacked and closed the gap to Pinot and Nibali about 500 meters from the finish. So it came to a four-man sprint. Geniez won this ahead of Pinot and Nibali.

The race was overshadowed by a fall from the Swiss Sébastien Reichenbach (FDJ). Reichenbach's team FDJ announced via social media that Reichenbach had been knocked off the bike by the Italian Gianni Moscon (Italy / Sky), who ended up seventh. Moscon is said to have taken revenge for the incident at the Tour de Romandie 2017 , where Reichenbach published that Moscon had racially insulted Kévin Réza (FDJ). Reichenbach broke an elbow and had to undergo an operation. He also filed a complaint against Moscon with the Italian police.
