life and career

Trevor Bardette was born in rural southwest Arkansas in 1902. During his engineering studies at Oregon State University , he gained his first experience in his later career at the university drama club. In 1925, he received his Masters of Science from Northwestern University in Illinois , but then worked only for a short time as an engineer and instead turned to an acting career. In 1927 he married Dorothy Virginia Chandler, with whom he remained married until his death 50 years later.

After an unsuccessful time at the theater on the US East Coast, he turned to the Hollywood business. Between 1937 and 1970 he worked in Hollywood on over 175 films and over 60 television series. He died a violent death in over 40 of his films. He played very often in westerns and was considered to be one of the “ archetypal villains” of this genre, who had the chance of memorable characterizations of western villains, especially in B-movies and film series . He also played villains in other film genres, for example the Nazi spy Jensen in the propaganda film The Secret Code . In more elaborate film productions such as Gone with the Wind , however, Bardette's appearances were more often unnamed in the credits. Bardette has also had supporting roles in a number of film noirs , best known as the gas station operator conspiring with a gang of criminals in the classic movie Dead Sleeping Tight at the side of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall .

From the 1950s, Bardette also played on US television, including in 38 episodes of the western series Wyatt Earp intervenes , in which he often came into conflict with the sheriffs of the series in the role of the rough rancher Old Man Clayton . In 1970 he retired from the film business and spent his final years on his Arizona ranch, which he had bought. He died there in November 1977 shortly after his 75th birthday.
