The Rugby Championship 2019

Tri Nations 2020 was the 24th edition of the annual tournament between the best national teams of the southern hemisphere in the sport of rugby union . The teams from Argentina , Australia and New Zealand were involved . In contrast to previous years, the defending champion and reigning world champion South Africa did not take part due to travel restrictions and safety concerns in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic . This meant that The Rugby Championship tournament temporarily reverted to the format of its predecessor, Tri Nations returned, in which each team competed twice against the other two.

In order to be able to play the games in front of an audience despite the pandemic, the idea was initially to play all games in New Zealand, which, unlike many other countries, had practically no new infections. On September 11th, the participating associations agreed that all games would take place in Australia instead. Five weeks later, on October 16, the South African Rugby Union announced that it would not participate.
