Triangle choke
The Triangle Choke , or sankaku-jime (三角 絞) in Judo is a submission in which the opponent's neck is crushed with the legs. In order to prevent the opponent from freeing himself, one of his arms is blocked across his own neck to the other side.
This leads to a lateral vascular restriction of the blood flow from the carotid artery to the brain and if you do not give up you will lose consciousness.
history
The triangle choke was first used by the judo master Tsunetane Oda in 1910 and documented on film.
The technique is often used in grappling martial arts such as Judo, BJJ , Vale Tudo or Sambo . It is also popular with MMA because it can be used without GI and , if done correctly, the risk of slipping on sweaty skin is low.
MMA fighter Toby Imada won against Jorge Masvidal in 2009 because of a triangle choke . The victory was later named "Submission of the year".
Also Royce Gracie defeated Dan Severn in the early UFC 4 tournament by a Triangle.
Technology and application
As a rule, the triangle is executed from the ground when you control the opponent in the guard .
However, advanced fighters also use variations, such as
- various triangles from the side ("Side Triangle")
- Triangle from above from the Mount ("Mount Triangle")
- Triangles from behind ("Back Triangle")
- the jumped variant "Flying Triangle".
All triangles can also be inverted .
As a technique to be distinguished from this is the " Arm Triangle ", which is used in the execution but is independent , in which instead of the legs, the blocking takes place using one's own arms. The aforementioned variation of the techniques is also possible here.
The isolation of the arm makes the opponent very vulnerable. Punches by the opponent are made impossible. The Triangle Choke can also be used as the basis for other submissions such as the Kimura or an arm bar .
defense
There are several techniques to defend against the triangle choke, all of which aim to break the opponent's leg lock using leverage.
In order to defend yourself against the triangle choke or to escape it, depending on how advanced the triangle choke is, you may first have to lift your head to create space and relieve the arteries .
Depending on the technique, he then either has to push his shoulders forward to build tension on the opponent's legs or push to the side and twist himself out.
All techniques aim to worsen the angle until the opponent finally has to break off the choke.
