Tricks Of The Subconscious is a 2013 Canadian animated comedy short film directed by Chris Landreth .

action

At a party, Charles Langford is approached by a man who knows his name. Charles knows that he met the man a few years ago in Paris , but doesn't know his name. As the man goes to a bar to get drinks, Charles tries desperately to remember the man's name.

The game show Subconscious Password begins in Charles' subconscious . The show is hosted by Charles' Über-Ich , guests and tipsters for Charles are initially Dick Van Dyke and Yoko Ono . The viewer is shown the solution "John", Charles' profit on the show would be to avoid an embarrassing situation in real life. Dick van Dyke's tip " Travolta " does not lead to a flash of inspiration in Charles. William S. Burroughs gives " Kennedy " as a clue, but Charles only thinks of " Bobby ". Even James Joyce and HP Lovecraft can not help while his nanny and Charles Ayn Rand can be him again for toddler and giant baby. Sammy Davis, Jr. gets stuck with Lennon , and the Blessed Virgin fails with her reference to the apostle .

In reality, the man returns to Charles with drinks. He literally drowns in his subconscious because he can't find the solution. Only the rapid succession of people who were called to him by surname in the past few minutes makes it clear to him that the name must be "John". The relief is so great that in the following conversation he constantly addresses John by first name.

production

Chris Landreth created subconscious tricks on the National Film Board of Canada . Students from the animation workshops at Seneca College Animation Arts Center were involved in the realization of the film. The film was computer animated in 3D. The software used was Autodesk Maya , a 3D modeling software, and SANDDE from IMAX Corporation. Scenes around John Dilworth and Chris Landreth at the celebration were created as pixilation (single image switching), a form of stop motion , with the backgrounds being generated on the computer. It was Landreth's first 3D film and the third that he made at the NFB.

The show in the film is a nod to the Password show that was televised in the 1960s. Landreth saw a repeat of the show in 2010, which led him to the film idea.

The film premiered at the Festival d'Animation Annecy in June 2013 and was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and the Festival du Court-Métrage de Clermont-Ferrand in January 2014 . On January 31, 2014 it ran on Arte for the first time on German television.

Awards

Tricks of the Subconscious won 2013 at the Festival d'Animation Annecy des Cristal d'Annecy . At the Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid he received the Silver Ear for Best Short Film. In 2014 it was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Animated Short Film.
