Tricky Women / Tricky Realities ( spelling TRICKY WOMEN / TRICKY REALITIES ) is a film festival dedicated to the international animation of women and has been taking place in Vienna since 2001 .

overview

The festival was founded by Antonia Cicero, Waltraud Grausgruber and Birgitt Wagner. It emerged from the FrauenFilmInitiative and is supported by the culture2culture association, which - originally under the name XX-films - was launched in 1994. From 2001 to 2018 the festival ran under the name Tricky Women , since 2019 it has operated under the name Tricky Women / Tricky Realities. Since the 2003 edition, Grausgruber and Wagner have been running the festival together. Until 2007 Tricky Women was held every two years, since 2008 it has been held annually. The festival period at the beginning of March was chosen because of the close proximity to International Women's Day .

Sections

In terms of content, Tricky Women / Tricky Realities focuses on animated films and the filmmaking of Austrian and international filmmakers. The festival is divided into different sections: international competition, retrospective, programs on various topics such as “ Fair Play & Equity ”, animated documentaries, feature films, the Austria panorama as well as annually revised country focal points and specials.

There are also exhibitions, workshops and lectures. Numerous film artists and curators are invited to the festival every year, including Signe Baumane , Caroline Leaf , Jayne Pilling , Maureen Furniss, Julie Roy, Vera Neubauer , Mara Mattuschka , Marjut Rimminen, Judith Gruber-Stitzer , Janet Perlman , Marguerite Abouet and Nina Paley .

An established program of the festival is the best practice afternoon, during which filmmakers, theorists, curators and industry representatives exchange ideas with one another through lectures and workshops, report on their work experience and analyze different aspects of both animation filmmaking and the positions of women in the film business.
