description

Vegetative characteristics

The pale clover is a deciduous, perennial, herbaceous plant with a strong taproot and no runners. It grows loose grass. The plant is mostly bare. The prostrate to ascending and not rooting stem is 5 to 10, rarely up to 20 cm long, numerous, usually without branches and glabrous, or only slightly hairy on the upper side.

The leaves are fingered in threefold, the lower ones are stalked 4 to 8 cm long, the stem-like leaves are shorter. The leaflets are 6 to 20 mm long and about half as wide, their shape is elliptical to obovate, blunt or pointed. They have 10 to 20 pairs of weakly protruding lateral nerves, the leaf margin is finely serrated, the blades glabrous or slightly hairy on the nerves on the underside. The stipules are small. The lower stem leaves are significantly less than half as long as the petiole. They are white-skinned, ovate-lanceolate, glabrous and only briefly fused with the petiole. The free part is pointed long.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from July to August. The stem-like or apparently basal and upright to ascending inflorescence shaft is strong and 2 to 9 cm long. The head-shaped inflorescence is 15 to 25 mm wide and initially spherical and contains many flowers. The scattered hairy and curved back after the anthesis pedicels are 1.5 to 4 mm in length at least longer than the bracts and the calyx tube. The almost bald calyx is ten-nerved, membranous and has an open, bald throat. The calyx teeth are narrow triangular and pointed. The upper calyx teeth are much longer than the lower ones and also longer than the calyx tube. The crown is 6 to 10 mm long, three times as long as the calyx. The petals are dirty white to pink, turning dark brown after anthesis. The flag is broadly elliptical to obovate, curved upwards in an arch. A keel is missing. The wings are spreading and blunt.

The short-stalked to almost sedentary legume is not constricted and usually contains two seeds. The seeds are lenticular to kidney-shaped.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Pale clover ( Trifolium pallescens )

ecology

The pale clover are hemicryptophytes .

Occurrence

The pale clover occurs from Spain via France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria via the Balkans (Albania to Bulgaria) to Greece and the Ukraine.

It grows on damp rubble , on moraines and lawns. In the Eastern Alps it is restricted to the Silicate Alps , but is considered to be pH-indifferent as it also occurs on soils that are rich in calcium. Schmeil-Fitschen calls this species lime-avoiding. It occurs in the alpine and subnival altitudes , in the Alps at altitudes of 1800 to 3020 meters. He is an association type of character of the Epilobion fleischeri.

Moraines are colonized shortly after the ice retreat . On these areas, the plants can reach an age of up to 10 years.

Systematics

The first description of Trifolium pallescens was made in 1804 by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in Jacob W. Sturm : Germany Flora ... , Dept. 1, Issue 15 A. Homonym of Trifolium pallescens Schreb. is Trifolium pallescens DC. in Flore Française. Troisième Édition (Suppl.), 1815, p. 555 published. Synonyms for Trifolium pallescens Schreb. are Amoria pallescens (Schreb.) C. Presl , Trifolium arvernense Lamotte , Trifolium glareosum (Ser.) Boiss.

Trifolium pallescens belongs to the Trifoliastrum subsection of the Trifolium section in the genus Trifolium .
