Tropico 3 is an economic simulation and the third part of the Tropico series . The game is the successor to the game Tropico 2: The Pirate Island , which was released in 2003. Tropico 3 was released on September 24, 2009 for Windows, an Xbox 360 version was released just under a month later. This console version is a novelty in the series, which was previously only available for Windows and Macintosh . In contrast to its two predecessors, the game was no longer published by Take 2 , but by Kalypso Media , which had previously bought the naming rights to the series. The game was developed by the Bulgarian team Haemimont Games . It was first announced in November 2008.

The add-on Tropico 3 - Absolute Power was released in May 2010. In August 2011, the successor Tropico 4 came onto the market. Feral Interactive released a macOS version in 2012 . A mobile version for iPad based on Tropico 3 was released on December 18, 2018 under the title Tropico , a version for iPhone on April 30, 2019.

Gameplay

General

As in the first part, the player takes on the role of "El Presidente", the dictator of the fictional banana republic Tropico. The aim of the game is to develop this island nation into a modern economic power.

There are also various industries that the player can promote on his island. Raw materials such as oil or fruit as well as industrial goods such as cigars or rum can be produced for export. Another source of income is tourism. The player can expand his island with hotels and attractions into a successful tourist resort.

But the player also earns from the population who consume tropical goods, visit attractions and pay rents.

The player must also pay attention to the satisfaction of his population when building the economy. So should z. B. pleasant working conditions are given, rents are not too high, food supply is guaranteed and not too much state control is present.

The flag of the fictional Tropico

Dissatisfied citizens can become rebels, mostly hiding in the forest and occasionally attacking buildings, mostly farm buildings. If rebels succeed in their attack, the player must expect his seat of government to be attacked in the near future. If the rebels destroy it, the current game is lost. To protect against rebellions, the player can build an army.

Foreign policy also plays an important role in Tropico 3. The player has ties to the USA and the USSR . If these relationships are good, import these goods from Tropico and support the player financially from time to time. If relations are bad, the player runs the risk of being replaced as head of state by a military invasion by one of the superpowers and sent into exile. In the event of an invasion, the current game is declared lost.

Factions

A special feature of Tropico 3 are the political factions to which your own population can belong. These factions have specific needs that the player must satisfy in order to maintain good relations with the respective faction. Most Tropicans belong to at least one of the factions. There are a total of seven factions, of which three are usually dominant, these are the capitalists , the communists and the militarists. Intellectual , religious, environmentalists and nationalists , on the other hand, usually play a rather subordinate role.

The needs of these groups can be derived from their names. Religious people demand a high church presence while intellectuals demand the building of schools and universities. The parliamentary groups often take opposing positions. B. Environmentalists cut off large industrial districts welcomed by capitalists. Therefore it is seldom possible to maintain good relations with all political groups.

Elections and edicts

The player can hold elections on a regular basis, but these can be faked or completely prevented. However, this has an impact on the satisfaction of the population. Regular elections are required by the academic part of the population. This means that with increasing industrialization and modernization, elections are called for more and more frequently. During elections, the player has options such as tax cuts, speeches, bribing voters, and the arrest or liquidation of political opponents.

Fixing an election date is a presidential decree . Decrees are special actions and ordinances that give the player advantages. Decrees are z. B. educational programs, sporting events, promotions and also the arrangement of a nuclear weapon test.

Characters

The appearance of El Presidente can be configured by the player himself. Various options are available to him in areas such as costumes, hairstyles, beards, headwear, skin colors or accessories. The player can also set the background and character of his character. These two options have a direct influence on the game. So a character described as entrepreneurial increases overall production. A character with an oil baron background gives a bonus to the export price of oil products.

However, the player can also choose from a catalog of ready-made characters. This consists of 20 mostly historical figures who, if historical, represent relevant personalities from Central and South America at the time of the Cold War. They include B. Che Guevara , Evita Perón or Fidel Castro .

Game modes

There are two modes available, the campaign and the free mode . The campaign consists of 15 unrelated missions, all of which take place on different islands and which impose goals on the player, such as making a certain profit or exporting a certain amount of specified goods. The player cannot influence the starting conditions. He can, however, create his own character and define characteristics that support him in achieving the objective of the mission.

In the free mode, the player does not receive any targets and can calmly start building a banana state either on a randomly created or a prefabricated island. The player himself can determine the starting conditions as well as basic parameters such as political stability, fertility of the island or the benevolence of the superpowers.

Another innovation are the faction disasters that are triggered by bad relationships with the respective group, e.g. B. student protests or environmental protection blockades.
