Gameplay

General

The gameplay of Tropico 4 is essentially the same as that of its predecessor Tropico 3 . It is a construction simulation set in the Caribbean that takes place during the Cold War. The player takes on the role of the dictator with the official title El Presidente , who rules a small Caribbean island. At the beginning of each game, the island is not very developed, mostly only the presidential palace, a dock, a few farms and a few residential buildings exist. When expanding the island, the player has various directions of development. So he can z. B. develop into a commodity exporter, an industrial nation or a tourist destination. In the course of development, the player comes into contact with various powers such as the USA , the Middle East or the European Union . The player is also exposed to other natural adversities - such as volcanic eruptions, droughts or tornadoes. Furthermore, the player is confronted with different political camps, with whose various political and ideological attitudes he has to deal with.

Like its predecessor, the game includes a campaign. Unlike its predecessor, the campaign includes 20 missions, five more than Tropico 3, and tells a continuous story. Therefore, the missions can no longer be completed in any order. An innovation is the introduction of the import system , whereby the player can meet his raw material needs for the first time by trading with foreign countries. Furthermore, some new buildings such as the stock exchange , the ministry or the shopping center were added.

Also new is the integration of the social networks Facebook and Twitter , which enables communication directly from within the game and the publication of achievements, for example on the Tropico-4 Facebook page of the publisher Kalypso. However, this function is only available in the Windows version. An improved editor is also included.

Domestic politics

The flag of the fictional Tropico

The administration and development of one's own nation is a central goal of the player. Primarily, this is done through the construction of buildings. There are numerous buildings divided into different categories such as Housing, Agriculture & Resources, Tourism, or Government. The buildings fulfill various functions, such as the provision of housing, health care, education, food supply or the production of export goods. To fulfill each function, there are several buildings that work with different levels of effectiveness. So z. B. a hospital care for more people than a clinic.

In Tropico there are eight factions that the player has to deal with. The political groups represent different interest groups, e.g. B. capitalists , communists , intellectuals , militarists , environmentalists or nationalists . The interests of the groups are z. T. opposite, z. For example, the intellectuals are interested in a high degree of personal and political freedom, while the militarists prefer a strictly hierarchical and controlled society. If the player does not meet the needs of a faction for a longer period of time, the faction concerned turns against its government. The effect varies from faction to faction, but always has a certain degree of destabilizing effect on the island. So z. For example, high levels of dissatisfaction among intellectuals lead to skilled workers leaving the island, while dissatisfaction among militarists increases the risk of a military coup against the president.

Decrees are available for the player to exercise political influence on the island . These are certain political ordinances that the player can enact at any time, provided that he has the necessary requirements. Because some decrees are linked to certain buildings. B. the hosting of a major sporting event a stadium . Other decrees such as sending a trade delegation or applying for development aid, however, are linked to good political relations with the nation concerned.

Foreign policy

Foreign policy is relevant to the player insofar as it enables Tropico's economic stability, as the player usually makes most of his money through exports. In the predecessor, the player was in constant interaction with the USA and the USSR . In Tropico 4 , the Middle East, the EU and the People's Republic of China have also been added. The Foreign Office, which the player can build and which can improve the diplomatic relations Tropico through diplomacy, serves for foreign policy.

Another innovation compared to its predecessor are national agendas . These are orders that representatives of the various nations can give the player. First and foremost, these include export tasks. The import system is also a novelty. So far it was only possible for the player to export their own goods in relation to trade. In Tropico 4 , he also has the option of importing goods from abroad. The player can mainly import raw materials for their own processing industry and food for their own population.
