Trustco Bank Namibia (until June 2014 FIDES Bank Namibia ) is a commercial bank in Namibia . The bank was taken over by the Namibian Trustco Group in May 2014 .

FIDES Bank Namibia received the provisional banking license on August 4th, 2009 and the permanent license on February 1st, 2010. The institution is headquartered in Ongwediva in the Oshana region .

Founded as the first microfinance bank since independence - and as one of five commercial banks - FIDES Bank Namibia has received a banking license from the Bank of Namibia (national regulator of banking operations).

history

FIDES Bank Namibia emerged from the Koshi Yomuti ELO pilot project . From 2002 until the bank was founded in 2010, the aim of this project was the development of microfinance activities for the rural population . The focus was on supporting income-generating business activities in this customer segment.

The project originally started in the Ohangwena region and expanded to Ondangwa in 2005 , to Oshakati in 2006 and to Outapi in 2007 .

When the bank was founded, the loan portfolio of the pilot project was transferred to the new institution. At the same time, the development of a portfolio for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) began.

activities

Trustco Bank Namibia is active in two product segments:

  • Financing income-generating activities ( microfinance ): The aim is to make savings and loan transactions accessible to customers who mostly live in the rural areas of the country. The development of this activity is based on a group method and is used almost exclusively by that part of the population that is excluded from the formal Namibian banking system.
  • Micro, small and medium business finance: The target is the semi-formal and formal business, which is normally not covered by traditional banks.

At the end of 2012, FIDES Bank Namibia had around 11,000 clients and a little more than 650 microfinance groups.

Geographical presence and branch network

Trustco Bank Namibia is represented in the four 'O' regions in northern Namibia ( Ohangwena , Omusati , Oshana and Oshikoto ). The first branch opened in Oshakati in early 2010 , with three more opened in Ondangwa , Oshikango and Outapi . The bank plans to open a branch in Katutura.

Ownership

Trustco Bank Namibia was initially in the hands of four shareholders.

  • Swiss Microfinance Holding (30.05%);
  • KfW (24.90%);
  • Investisseurs et Partenaires pour le développement from France (22.45%); and
  • The Belgian national assets NV (12.60%).
  • The French cooperative bank Crédit Coopératif (10.00% - since 2011)

The bank was taken over by the Namibian Trustco Group in May 2014 .
