Tschinar ( Russian Чинар Çinar ) is a village in Dagestan ( Russia ) with 5227 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

Tschinar is 14 km northwest of Derbent on the border between the plain on the coast of the Caspian Sea and the mountainous part of Dagestan. Most of the inhabitants belong to the ethnic groups of the Azerbaijanis , Dargins , Tabassarans and Agulians .

The place name refers to the name tschinar (a) for plane trees , which is common in the North Caucasus (partly also in Russian) , in memory of the now abandoned village of Kemach, located further up the mountains, from where some of the inhabitants of the place originally come and where there is a plane tree grove.

Economy and Transport

Most of the town's residents make a living from agriculture. Until the 1980s, mainly grapes were grown, today vegetables, especially tomatoes.

About five kilometers east of the village is the town of Dagestanskije Ogni with a train station on the Rostov-on-Don  - Makhachkala  - Azerbaijani border railway line . Tschinar is also not far from the federal highway M29 and is connected to it by an asphalt road.
