Tumupasa is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

location

Tumupasa is the central place of the canton Tumupasa in the district (Bolivian: Municipio ) San Buenaventura in the province Abel Iturralde . The village is located at an altitude of 468  m on the edge of the Bolivian lowlands in front of the Voranden chain of the Serranía de Mamuque , which extends from northwest to northeast between Río Tuichi and Río Beni and is broken at its southeastern end by the Río Beni.

Tumupasa is located on the western edge of the Moxos plain , with over 100,000 km² one of the largest wetlands on earth; the predominant form of vegetation in the Moxos plain is the tropical savannah . The climate in the region is tropical hot and humid all year round, but it can also get relatively cool in winter due to the Surazo (cold wind from the south).

The annual precipitation is almost 2000 mm, with monthly precipitation of around 300 mm in January and February and less than 100 mm in the months of August to September. The average monthly temperatures are between 23 ° C and 28 ° C all year round.

history

The local population had contact with the Incas in pre-Columbian times, as archaeological finds prove. The Spaniards did not colonize the area militarily, but through missionary work by Franciscans and Jesuits. Starting from Apolo , the area of ​​the northern Vorandenketten was developed and Tumupasa was founded in 1713 by missionaries.

Transport network

Tumupasa is 61 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Ixiamas and about 720 kilometers by road north of La Paz , the capital of the department.

A branch of the 1036-kilometer-long Ruta 16 highway runs through Tumupasa and will run from Porvenir near the Brazilian border in the northwest to Huarina on the southeastern edge of Lake Titicaca . The middle section of Ruta 16 , which has already been completed , leads from the provincial capital Ixiamas in the north on a 115 km long unpaved road via Tumupasa to San Buenaventura , from where there is a connection to the rest of Bolivia's road network via Rurrenabaque .
