Turgay Semercioğlu (born February 25, 1954 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. He was also active as a basketball player at times parallel to his football career. Through his many years of work for Trabzonspor , he is strongly associated with this association. On the fan and club side, he is considered one of the most important players in club history. He was an important member of the team that was the first Anatolian team to win the Turkish championship and, together with Şenol Güneş and Necati Özçağlayan, is one of the three players who were subsequently involved in all Trabzonspor championship titles. With 402 first division appearances for Trabzonspor he is after Hami Mandıralı (468 appearances) the player with the second most frequent Süper Lig appearances in the club's history. After his coaching career, he worked several times as a soccer coach.

Player career

society

Semercioğlu started playing football on the street and then played in the school teams. He attended in his hometown of Trabzon , the Cumhuriyet İlkokulu primary school and then reached on the Trabzon Lisesi the high school and a high school. During this time he played football and basketball on the school teams of these schools. After graduating from high school, he attended the Eğitim fakältesi to become a school teacher and began to play in the regional amateur league for Trabzon Çimentospor parallel to his studies . After graduating, he worked as a teacher for a few weeks.

In the summer of 1973 he had an offer from the second division Trabzonspor . This club had been founded six years earlier through the merger of several local clubs and had the intention of representing the city of Trabzonspor in the Süper Lig with local talent . Semercioğlu accepted the offer and thus ended his teaching career. Despite his young age, he found a regular place in the team. At the end of the season they reached the championship of the TFF 1st Lig and thus the long-awaited promotion to the Süper Lig.

The first season in the top Turkish league was rather mixed for Semercioğlu and he completed 17 league games. On the one hand, he made it into the Turkish national team , on the other hand, he was canceled several games, mostly due to injury. His team finished ninth in the table. In the second Süper Lig season, the championship was completely surprising. Up to this season, the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul decided the championship of the Süper Lig among themselves. With Eskişehirspor , another Anatolian club narrowly missed the championship three times, but the ban remained. It was only solved with Trabzonspor's championship. After this championship they dominated the league in the next season and collected not only the championship but also all other trophies in Turkish football by winning the Turkish Football Cup and the Turkish Supercup . It was not until the 1977/78 season that the championship was awarded to Fenerbahçe with a point difference, but the two other trophies were won. After this setback, they recovered relatively quickly and were again Turkish football champions over the next three seasons. Semercioğlu also experienced the last Trabzonspors championship in the summer of 1984 and was one of the top performers of his teams with 33 games. After this season Trabzonspor stayed in the top third of the table, but they couldn't win the championship.

Semercioğlu ended his active football career in the summer of 1988.

National team

Semercioğlu played the first time for the Turkish national team in the qualification for the European Football Championship in 1976 against the national team of the USSR. After this encounter he was a fixture in the national team for several years. He completed 26 of his 35 missions in a row. After he had played continuously until 1981, he was then no longer taken into account for six seasons. It was not until March 1987 that he was appointed to the squad for a friendly against the Romanian national team, and this was the last time he played for Turkey.

Coaching career

After finishing his active career, Semercioğlu remained loyal to football and Trabzonspor and was coach of the youth and reserve teams from 1990 to 1997.

In the summer of 1998 he worked for the first time as head coach and took over the second division side Şanlıurfaspor . After failing to live up to expectations, he left the club.

In the summer of 2001 he took over the reserve team Trabzonspors again and trained them until the resignation of head coach Samet Aybaba . After Aybaba's resignation, the vacated head coach position was offered to Semercioğlu, who agreed and trained the team until February 2004. After five matchdays and three consecutive defeats, he announced his resignation. He was replaced by Ziya Doğan .

Since his last job he has been active as a talent scout and technical advisor for the Turkish Football Association.
