Necati Özçağlayan (born May 15, 1953 in Trabzon ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Trabzonspor , he is very strongly associated with this association. On the fan and club side, he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. In addition, he is described as one of the best defensive players in the club and also in Turkey, who stayed in the background due to his introverted nature and therefore did not get the appreciation he deserved. He was an important member of the team that was the first Anatolian team to win the Turkish championship and, together with Şenol Güneş and Turgay Semercioğlu, is one of the three players who were subsequently involved in all Trabzonspor championship titles. After his playing career, he worked several times as a soccer coach and looked after several national youth teams in his country.

Player career

society

Özçağlayan was born in the Turkish provincial town of Trabzon in 1948 and began playing football in 1968 when Arsin Fındıklıspor was young . In 1970 he then moved to the youth of Trabzon Yolspor and rose here in 1971 to the professional squad. In the summer of 1972 he had an offer from the second division Trabzonspor . This club was founded five years earlier through the merger of several local clubs and had the intention to represent the city of Trabzonspor in the Süper Lig with local talent . Özçağlayan accepted the offer and played for Trabzonspor from then on. Despite his young age, he found a regular place in the team. At the end of his second season with the Black Sea Club, the championship of the TFF 1st Lig was reached and thus the long-awaited promotion to the Süper Lig.

The first season in the top Turkish league was successful for Özçağlayan and he completed 28 league games. His team made ninth place in the table in their first first division season. In the second Süper Lig season, the championship was completely surprising. Up to this season, the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul decided the championship of the Süper Lig among themselves. With Eskişehirspor , another Anatolian club narrowly missed the championship three times, but the ban remained. It was only solved with Trabzonspor's championship. After this championship, the league was dominated the next season and, in addition to the championship, collected all the other trophies in Turkish football by winning the Turkish Football Cup and the Turkish Supercup . It was not until the 1977/78 season that the championship was awarded to Fenerbahçe with a point difference, but the two other trophies were won. After this setback, they recovered relatively quickly and were again Turkish football champions over the next three seasons. Özçağlayan also experienced the last Trabzonspors championship in the summer of 1984 and was one of the top performers of his team with 33 games. After this season, Trabzonspor stayed in the top third of the table, but they couldn't win the championship.

At the end of the 1977/78 season Özçağlayan said goodbye to a farewell game played on August 11, 1978 against Galatasaray from the football stage.

National team

After promotion to the Süper Lig , Özçağlayan noticed those responsible for the Turkish U-21 national team and was nominated for the first time in the squad in March 1975. On March 27, 1975, he made his U-21 international debut as part of a friendly meeting against the Kuwaiti U-21 national team.

After another game for the Turkish U-21, he was nominated in April 1975 for a European Championship qualifier against the Swiss national team in the squad of the Turkish national team , but was on the bench during this encounter. After two U-21 internationals, he was nominated again in October 1975 for the Turkish national team and made his international debut during a friendly against the Romanian national team . After this game he was a regular player for about five years. He participated with the national team in the qualification of the European Football Championship 1976 , Qualification of the Football World Cup 1978 , Qualification of the European Football Championship 1980 , Qualification of the Football World Cup 1982 , but could not qualify with his team for any of the tournaments.

He made his last international match on October 7, 1981 during a World Cup qualifier against the national soccer team of the USSR .

Coaching career

Following his football career, he decided to switch to coaching. As one of his first activities, he became the assistant coach of the Turkish U-18 national team in the early 1990s and assisted the head coach Serpil Hamdi Tüzün . In this role he took part in the U-18 European Football Championship in 1993 with the Turkish U-18s . In this tournament, his team made it to the finals and became vice European champions of the U-18s after losing 1-0 in the final against hosts England.

For the following playing period he took over the position of assistant coach for the Turkish U-16 national team and thus assisted head coach Bora Öztürk . Under his leadership, the Turkish U-16s took part in the U-16 European Football Championship in 1994 and won the tournament.

After this success Özçağlayan took over as head coach of the Turkish U-15 national team. After only one year he took over the same position with the Turkish U-16 national team. He stayed in this position until the summer of 1998.

For the 1998/99 season he was introduced as head coach at the then second division side Adana Demirspor . He stayed in this position until the winter break and then left the club.

In the summer of 2000 he was introduced as the new coach of the Turkish U-19 national team.
