The Turrialba is a volcano in the Central American Republic of Costa Rica .

It is located northeast of Cartago , right next to the Irazú and rises 3325 m above the landscape. This makes it the second highest volcano in Costa Rica after the Irazú. It consists mainly of andesite and is equipped with four craters , of which the northeasternmost is the oldest and is already extinct.

There were several explosive eruptions with pyroclastic currents in the 19th century , the last major eruption occurred in 1866.

The Turrialba has been active again since January 2006. Settlements near the crater were then temporarily evacuated.

Activities 2015

The penultimate outbreak occurred on March 12, 2015 and resulted in the closure of San José Airport for one day. After minor activities in the previous days, a cloud of ash so large rose around noon that villages within a two-kilometer radius were evacuated. On May 4, 2015, the Turrialba volcano emitted another ash cloud that reached a height of 2500 m.

Outbreak 2016

The volcano erupted on May 21, 2016 and ejected clouds of ash up to three kilometers high. Air traffic to Costa Rica was then restricted, some schools in the area were closed and residents were advised to wear respiratory masks and body-covering clothing.

On September 19, 2016, there was another eruption of dust and stones. Again, all flights from Juan Santamaría International Airport were canceled.

As of December 31, 2016, there were further eruptions of ash from the volcano. On January 4, 2017, numerous flights at Juan Santamaría International Airport were delayed or canceled.
