Tyler "Ty" Dillon (born February 27, 1992 in Lewisville , North Carolina ) is an American racing driver who competes in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series . He is the son of former racing driver Mike Dillon and grandson of NASCAR Hall of Fame member and team owner Richard Childress . His older brother Austin Dillon also drives in NASCAR .

Dillon drives a # 13 Chevrolet Camaro for Germain Racing . He is also a part-time driver in the Xfinity Series and the Camping World Truck Series . In the latter, he was voted Rookie of the Year in 2012 and the most popular driver in 2013. In 2014 he contested his first race in the Sprint Cup.

Career

Beginnings

Dillon began his career in a Bandolero minicar. In 2009 he started for the first time in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East , where he was able to fight for the title in 2010, although he only contested eight of the ten races of the season. He achieved a win at Gresham Motorsports Park in August 2010 .

In 2010 he also competed in the ARCA Racing Series , winning two of the three races in which he competed. In the following year he drove there for the entire season and was able to secure the title with a total of seven wins. Although he defeated Chris Buescher by 340 points in the championship, he lost the Rookie Of The Year Award against him.

NASCAR

Camping World Truck Series

In 2011, Dillon competed in the Camping World Truck Series for the first time , finishing 18th on his debut at Kentucky Speedway . In 2012 he was able to place in the top ten in the first five races. On August 31st, at the race at Atlanta Motor Speedway , he achieved his first victory in one of the three top classes of NASCAR. In 2013, Dillon finished second in the championship behind Matt Crafton . He was voted the most popular driver in the series.

Xfinity Series

Dillon made his Nationwide Series debut in June 2012 at Dover International Speedway . In 2012 and 2013 he competed sporadically in the races, with his best result being a third place in 2012 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway . In 2014, Dillon drove the entire season for the first time. On July 26, 2014, he achieved his first victory when he won the race in Indianapolis ahead of Kyle Busch . At the end of the season, he finished second in the race for the Rookie of the Year title, which Chase Elliott won. In 2015 and 2016 he returned to the Xfinity Series and finished third and fifth respectively.

Monster Energy Cup Series

He made his Sprint Cup debut on August 31, 2014 at Atlanta Motor Speedway , finishing the race in 25th place. He also started at the Phoenix International Raceway , where he finished 27th. In 2015 he competed in five races, including the Daytona 500 . His best finish was a 14th place on Michigan International Speedway . In 2016 he drove for three different teams. He shared the number 95 vehicle from Leavine Family Racing with Michael McDowell . Dillon also drove number 14 when replacing the injured Tony Stewart . He finished seventh on the Talladega Superspeedway . The result was credited to Tony Stewart, however, as he started and gave his place to Dillon at the first pit stop. Dillon also drove number 7 from Regan Smith , who had left the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 early to be there when his child was born. In 2017, he took over number 13 from Casey Mears at Germain Racing for the entire season .

Other racing series

Dillon drove two races in the NASCAR Pinty's Series in the 2013 season .

On June 16, 2014, Dillon drove in the Trans-Am series at Road America . After he started in sixth, he finished fourth.
