In autumn 2020 she will become the first woman to become the Israeli ambassador to the United Kingdom , succeeding Mark Regev .

Biography and political positions

Hotovely's parents come from Georgia. She grew up in her hometown and studied law at the religious Zionist Bar Ilan University and Tel Aviv University . She has been married to Or Alon since 2013 and is the mother of three children.

She has been writing a column in the Maariw newspaper since 2006 and also appears otherwise as a media personality.

On February 24, 2009, she became a member of the (18th) Knesset , making her the youngest person ever to be elected to the Knesset. She left the Knesset on July 5, 2020.

Hotovely is counted on the right wing of the Likud, describes himself as the “religious right”, is significantly involved in the ideological shaping of the politics of her party and regularly speaks out against the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Hotovely advocates a "Greater Israel" that also includes the Palestinian territories. She reiterated this view in a speech to Israeli diplomats in May 2015, in which she rejected international criticism of Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank and said that Israel was trying too hard to appease other countries and had to take more care of itself. She said, “We have to come back to the basic truth that we have a right to this land. ... This land is ours. The whole country is ours. We are not there to apologize. ”She said she would do her best to ensure that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are recognized internationally and that Israel does not have to apologize for its policies towards the Palestinians. She justified her position with references to the religious writings of Judaism in order to underpin the claim of the Jewish people to the West Bank.

Hotovely advocates a right to prayer for Jews on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem , stating that her dream is "to see the Israeli flag fly on the Temple Mount". The Temple Mount is "the center of Israeli sovereignty, in Israel's capital, the holiest place of the Jewish people".

In addition, Hotovely campaigned for women's rights within Orthodox Judaism and caused an international stir in December 2011 when she joined the current debate about the demand for gender segregation by some ultra-Orthodox Jews by taking a so-called Mehadrin bus publicly in the department intended for men.

Tzipi Hotovely on Rosh Hashanah 2017

In connection with Sigmar Gabriel's 2017 visit to Israel and the scandal surrounding the talks with Breaking the Silence and B'Tselem , she described the Israeli organization Breaking the Silence as “enemies of Israel”.

When Hotovely was named Israeli ambassador to the UK as the successor to Mark Regev in 2020 , several prominent representatives of the UK Jewish community - including Melanie Phillips, Jenni Frazer, Laura Janner-Klausner and Jeremy Beecham, Baron Beecham  - criticized the Appointed because of their far-right views, stating, “The appointment of a far-right ambassador is representative of the current government of Israel, but Israel will not make friends in the UK, as in any other sane country.” Na'mod, a relatively new one Organization of Left-wing British Jews, organized a petition against Hotovely's appointment because of "her appalling history of racist and hate speech throughout her political career". Anshel Pfeffer, on the other hand, wrote in Haaretz : “Tzipi Hotovely is the ugly, extremist face of Israel; the British Jews should welcome them. Hotovely is an unabashed Islamophob and religious fundamentalist and denies the existence of the Palestinian people. "
