UHF is a Portuguese rock band .

history

Founded in Almada in 1977 under the name Á Flor da Pele (German roughly: Getting under the skin , also bare nerves ), they gave their first concert on November 20, 1978 under the name UHF, together with the bands Aqui d'el Rock , Minas e Armadilhas and Os Faíscas in the Lisbon Bar É . In 1979 her first 7 ″, the 3-song EP Jorge Morreu (German: Jorge has died) was released. Together with Rui Veloso , they became a major engine of the emerging rock music boom in Portugal. They played with numerous foreign bands, especially in the greater Lisbon area, for example in 1979 as the opening act for concerts by Elvis Costello or Dr. Feelgood , or 1980 as the opening act for the Ramones , and with The Skids , The Tourists , Original Mirrors and 999 at the 1st Rock Festival in Cascais , before appearing in 1981 with Téléphone and the Dexys Midnight Runners . UHF were important for the founding of the band Xutos & Pontapés by lending them instruments, rehearsing with them and giving them further assistance.

The 1980 single Cavalos de Corrida (Eng .: race horses) reached first place in the Portuguese single charts, and the following album Á Flor da Pele achieved gold status . In 1982 the band toured France and Germany, and again in late 1987.

While the band was mainly influenced by punk and power pop at the time of their greatest popularity in the early 1980s, rock and hard rock increasingly became the most obvious influence of the band. From 1988 the popularity of the band grew again, and they also played on a larger scale, such as the 1st Rock do Benfica Festival in 1988, together with Bonnie Tyler , Saxon and Bryan Adams . The singer and head of the band also expressed his support for the football club Benfica Lisbon with a single dedicated to the club and two albums of the same kind, one of which made it into the charts in 2005. In 1994 UHF participated in the Filhos da Madrugada (Eng .: Children of the Dawn) tribute project for José Afonso , and they have released a number of records since then. The last two albums Porquê? (German: Why?) and Ao Norte Unplugged (German: to the north unplugged) reached the charts.

The band, which has sung mainly in Portuguese since its founding , dealt with a wide range of topics in their mostly critical and sometimes poetic lyrics, mostly written by singer Ribeiro, such as the dangers of drug abuse, the false promises of a materialistic society, and the multiple human weaknesses. UHF are now considered to be one of the most influential groups in rock music history in Portugal.
